How did I miss this remote historic place. It was informative, easy hiking with lots of nature. We strolled to the former railroad site, San Pedro river and of course the colonial fort. The trail is a rocky well marked gradual incline going in and slight decline returning. We stopped along the way to observe black-throated, sparrows, cassin’s sparrows, butterflies, moths and lots of caterpillars. The early morning monsoons made for a beautiful landscape of various colors of green and magnificent wildflowers. Because we strolled slowly our hike took about two hours and was under 4 miles. No worries about having to use the bathroom there was a clean, modern earth friendly facility at the site. Be sure to read the interpretive signs to truly appreciate this special piece of American history.

Check the weather before you proceed, if you see storm clouds or heavy rain is predicted, save this walk for a dry day. If it does rain avoid the washes. The San Pedro river was flowing swiftly upon our visit and the ground was extremely slippery with areas of dry quick sand. Head caution. We had spotty cell phone reception. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring insect repellent, water, where layers of clothing, bring a snack and please let someone know of your itinerary in the event of any issues. We saw no-one during our visit

We started late on this trail to Santa Cruz de Terranate.

We like hiking. It good us for us. However, we could not find the Santa Cruz de Terrenate.

When we were arrived, we saw all kind of the Presidio of Santa Cruz de Terrenate.

We could seethe gate, chapel and more

Then we noticed that it was getting dark and we heard wolves.

We left and walked fast as much we could. We came on time.

We had fun though!

P.S The Presidio excited in the past!

A must see!

It would be better to visit in the afternoon!

P.S. It is free

This is a nice easy hike, if you're into hiking. It's less than 4 miles round trip along the San Pedro River Riparian. Lots of good birding. The presidio itself is little more than standing where it happened. Although there are still a few melted ruins, most is left up to your imagination. There is an interpretive trail that's about a mile around where the fort once stood, with signs telling what used to be there and illustrations. The fort was never entirely completed. By 1780 (apx 5 years of occupation) it was abandoned due mostly to attacks by Indians. Later, during the Indian campaigns the cavalry used it.
Please note, the trails require a day fee at the parking lot of 5.00. It is an honor system. About 3/4 of the way on the trail there are bathrooms.

Not everyone will enjoy this hike. The first quarter-mile of the hike is badly eroded in parts from flash floods and horses (which can use this trail that is managed by the Bureau of Land Management, or BLM). The trail is completely exposed to the sun, so hike this only on cool, overcast days. There is no water or vending machines. The site is in its natural state. People who enjoy this hike like archeological sites and expansive hiking trails. The entire San Pedro river is replete with history and the 40 miles in Arizona are part of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, or SPRNCA.

Free parking for the trailhead is 1.75 miles north on In Balance Ranch Road off SR82 (last dirt road west of the San Pedro River. There is an informational sign with a map of the area. Step over the low metal gate and begin the gentle downward trail. Views of St. David to the northeast and the Dragoon mountains and the San Pedro River to the east mark your location. Note the telephone poles running north-south along the dirt road; they mark your western boundary.

The trail is well-marked with a directional arrow every 1/4 mile. You will come to an old railroad bed and turn right. (Turn left and you can hike to the abandoned mill town of Contention, but that section is not marked by the BLM). This section is level and easy hiking. You can rest at any of the six sun-bleached benches and enjoy the panorama. There's even a pit toilet at the last trail intersection, 1/4 mile from the ruins.

Horses have to be tied here on the posts provided by the BLM. The remaining adobe ruins of the Commander's barracks and the chapel are still (barely) standing. The rest of the area has been taken over by fragrant creosote and white acacia, that prickly shrub so prevalent in the Chihuahuan desert. The one-way hike is 1.2 miles. You may track more if you walk around here to read the iron cross dedicated to Cpt Francisco Tovar and 29 soldiers, who were killed by Apache at that location on July 7th, 1776.

You can continue the hike by taking an unmarked road down to a lower railroad xbed and hike north, paralleling the river. The railroad bed is very soft and can get hot in the summer. My dogs enjoyed the jaunt down to the river before we returned the way we came.

You can extend this hike by hiking north on the first railroad bed and then taking the next right down to the river where the trail connects to the second railroad bed, continue north another half mile before fording the river. The site of Contention is not marked here from this location, but you will be able to see adobe ruins much like what you saw at Terrenate. Then return the way you came back to the parking lot for a satisfying 6-mile hike. Remember all artifacts are protected under federal law.

In Balance Road ends a half-mile north of the parking lot and becomes private property. Note that this area is heavily patrolled by the US Border Patrol, so be cautious when hiking here at dawn and dusk. Coyote, javelina, rattlesnakes and deer also live here.

It's very hard to rate this place. I see some really low ratings which I can understand if your looking for wild scary adventure, but if your looking for a trip in the "Wayback Machine" across beautiful high desert and through riparian habitat this is it. This site is very special for historians interested in Spanish Colonial history of the Southwest. It was hard to find. We used our GPS and explored until we found the dirt road to the Trailhead which is 9 miles west of Tombstone on AZ Route 82 and just west of the ghost town of Fairbank and the Babocomari River riparian habitat. It is off the highway on Kellar Rd. From the trailhead it is about and hour hike across level high desert. The tricky part for us was determining which way to go when the trail reaches a service road. Go left (east) and you will find a directional sign. The Presidio ruins are just above the Cottonwoods along the river. I particularly enjoyed the site because of the information signs that help you identify what the ruins were like the Commandant's headquarters, the barrracks and the chapel. The stone footings of the defensive walls are very clear so the gate opening can be found. Bring adequate water and a lunch if you would like.

The Spanish seemed to find their way here with little trouble, except for the Apache, but travelers today would have a hard time finding it given the lousy directions most other reviews and Apple's Map App gave! So here, hopefully, are better directions. Going south from Benson or north from Tombstone go west on 82 for 5.5 miles. When you get to Fairbank Historic Townsite keep going another 1.8 miles west and turn to go north on In Balance Ranch Road. Go another 1.8 miles (just past Trails End Rd) you'll see a large parking area on the right. Park there and walk through the gated entry. Now here's where i also got a lot of confused directions. The walk to the ruins area is about a mile east across the desert and continues south along the old railroad grade. When you reach the ruins area, which is well marked with a large sign, there is a half mile loop trail that takes you through the Presidio area with descriptive signage about what used to be there. Some partial adobe walls are still in evidence but not much more. The most enjoyable part is the scenery and relative isolation as-well-as a nice walk. It was a warm day in Feb when we went and some water is still advisable for yourself or pets.

The Presidio is not well preserved. But, the BLM has done a great job of stabilizing what is left and installing interpretive signs to illustrate what it was and the purpose that it served. The hike from the parking lot is not strenuous. But, it is across mostly open high desert with little or no shade. Dress accordingly with sturdy shoes, a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.

Definitely off the beaten track, worth a stroll with good but not hot, weather. Hard to believe humans existed and defended the location, but given the proximity of good water in So. Arizona, the Spanish were up to something!

If you love local Spanish history, archaeology or want a good walk in the desert you will enjoy this. No cameras really needed. You will find better Spanish ruins in Tubac with shops to enjoy as well. Nice view of the valley, great date, although take good walking shoes. Not really a wheelchair friendly place at all.

A short 1/2 mile hike takes you to the Adobe remains of an old Spanish presidio near the San Pedro River. Of interest are the interpretive signs.
