East Jesus, nestled in the arid landscapes of Niland, California, is a remarkable eco-themed art project that stands as a testament to creativity and sustainability. This unique desert outpost showcases a mesmerizing sculpture garden comprised of repurposed junk and waste materials, where discarded treasures find new life as captivating works of art. Surrounded by the stark beauty of the desert, East Jesus is a testament to the power of human imagination in the face of environmental challenges, inspiring visitors to contemplate the intersection of art, nature, and sustainability while enjoying the whimsical and thought-provoking pieces that emerge from this otherworldly oasis.

A lot of random artwork. Some political in nature. Other just plan creepy. If you go with an open mind it is pretty cool. I wouldn't want to get in an argument with these people though :-)

We all loved this ever evolving art installation located in the middle of nowhere. We were told that over couple of thousand artists contributed to its creation. The entrance is free but donations are appreciated. In my view it is a great place for everyone.

Friendly folks all around, if you want unconventional recycling inspiration this is your place. We spent about an hour looking around. After leaving we had so many questions and wished we had talked to the resident guides more. When we were there it was quite busy with a convoy of off-road vehicle drivers that arrived at same time.

This collection of art is worth the better part of an hour... there's so much to see if you spend some time wandering and looking at all there is to see. Some of it probably won't "speak to you" (it didn't to me), but there were plenty of gems in the midst of everything else. And the two people greeting visitors were so grateful for my donation.

Just a few miles from Salvation Mountain and Slab City, one will find the compound of East Jesus. East Jesus is a habitable experimental camp, with a unique collection of manmade art located in the middle of nowhere. The residents of East Jesus and several offsite outpost camps provide a haven and refuge for artists, musicians, survivalists, writers, scientists, and “weirdos”. Everyone is allowed to do his / her own thing. These community are completely self-contained and follow their own rules of conduct and behavior. Most of the camps run entirely on solar power. Living quarters, an open-air kitchen, library, garden, and musical room complete with a grand piano make up this outpost in the desert. All the comforts of home except running water and a functional sewer system. Residents of East Jesus use and recycle every bit of consumable trash. Tourist flock to East Jesus to marvel at the vast art garden containing unique works of art made from trash / garbage and other materials. The Art Garden is open and free to the public, sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year. View the art, do not touch, or move anything and stay out of areas marked private. Violate these simple rules, and you had better be prepared to fight. Works of art by several dozen different artist ae on display. Some are excellent, other are just bizarre and other are just “say what”. The Bottle Wall (Wall made of discarded stacked bottles); Mammoth (sculpture of a Mammoth elephant made from old blown out tires); TV Wall (a large collection of televisions with strange message portrayed on the blank screens), Entry Archway and Sunken House partially buried in the sand are just a few of the different “art” exhibitions on display. Many other displays are either in work or have been abandoned by their creators. All have been created utilizing trash, garbage, and discarded junk. Old derelict vehicles are also on display. Some have been left to rust away while others are decorated and brightly painted. Strange. Some of these wrecks’ serve as homes for a few residents. Tourist are allowed to camp in East Jesus for a couple of days at a time, at a cost of $15.00-$25.00 per night. However, you must follow a strict set of rules. An interesting site for the connoisseur of bizarre and weird art. If you visit this location, make sure you wear a hat. During our visit, the temperature hit 106o F and there is minimal shade. Plenty of drinking water is essential and take precautions. Lock your car, watch your possessions, and control your children (no recommended). You are accepted but not wanted. This is a free-living community and basically you are on your own. Expect to be pestered for cash or food donations. If you provide whiskey or beer, you are a friend until it all gone. My recommendation is to visit, view the art and surrounding community and then leave the area prior to dark.

We're so sad this is currently "closed" (CA covid shut down). You can still drive through and take in a lot but there's so much more art beyond the front gate.

At one end of Slab City this is a one of a kind whimsical museum. From the wreckage of a small plane to vintage cars, it is truly imaginative and a testament to American pop culture.

There is a group of 16 of us planning to go to Salvation Mtn. Would arranging a tour be best to see East Jesus or, alternatively, just wander around on our own?

I agree with other travelers. I am not aware of tour providers for the East Jesus/Slab City area, but it's a close distance past Salvation Mountain and very easy and accessible to get there and around on your own.
Keep in mind, these people live here and this is their neighborhood/home you are traveling through and gawking at. I felt somewhat awkward like I was invading their space at times, but at the same time, it seems that East Jesus was created for visiting and viewing from outsiders.
As another mentioned, I would definitely recommend googling the area and doing some of your own research before you go. It's definitely an experience worth seeing!
Tip* Be sure to get there before dark to see everything. Although I believe they still have a get-together every Saturday night at the stage in the center of the community, I'm not sure outsiders are welcome? It's also extremely dark, so to take everything in requires enough daylight!

Not sure if anyone will notice my follow up question in between the answers, so I'll ask it as a new question:
thanks all for the advise, much appreciated.
However though, due to work it seems like june will be the only time we can go... and I really want to visit this site.
I have some flexibility in my schedule though, do you guys think that going in the early morning or evening could be an option to make the heat more bearable?

Early morning should be ok; the artists may not be up yet, but you can walk through the sculpture garden on your own - 1 hour is probably enough time to see it. Do take plenty of water with you!

I've visited Salvation mountain on our trip to the US last year, would like to visit this place as wel next year. Last time we were there in April, next year we'll be there in June, I'm wondering if:
1. There are going to be any artists living there?
2. It'll be fun in the hot sun? (out there in the dessert?)
I think I remember reading somewhere that most locals move out of slab city during the summer, because its to hot, true or false?

As for the locals - the true locals stay year-round. it's the snowbirds and other transient types who leave for the summer.
