We did a little free walking tour. It was fun. But there really isn't much here. The shops were not open.

We had a fantastic dinner at Saigon Alley restaurant located in Reeder’s Alley. The food was top notch, especially the Bao. Reeder’s Alley has wonderful history of Helena and is a must see.

While things were closed, given it was a Sunday, I got a very strong sense of place and history here. Last Chance Gulch just feels more like a nice pedestrian mall, but the history here made this more special and unique to me.

Reeder's Alley is a well maintained alley that is a stone's throw away from the Main Street, which is also called the Last Chance Gulch. The alley housed the cabins of the gold miners who flocked to Helena and is an integral part of the evolution of the city. The Pioneer Cabin, which was built by Wilson Butts, is at the entrance to the Reeder's Alley. I was impressed to read that it is restored and furnished with items from the 19th and 20th century. The restorations done on Reeder's Alley is generally impressive and the effort to preserve the mining history of town for future generations is commendable. There are a number of plaques detailing some of the buildings and history associated, which help with the context. The businesses were closed when we visited on a Sunday but that also meant that there were no crowds, which translated to us walking around at a leisurely pace around the brick buildings.

We became aware of this area while on the Last Chance Trolley Tours. Strolled through Reeder’s Alley later that evening. Interesting historic place. Taking time to read the information placards helps to add an understanding to the history of this location. If you have some time to kill while in Helena, you’ll get some walking in as well as some more immersion into local history when you visit this area.

The first miners arrived in Last Chance Gulch in 1864; and a few years later, a brick layer named Louis Reeder arrived from Pittsburgh. He quickly recognized the need for low cost housing for the mostly single men working the gulch, so he constructed this collection of buildings on nearby West Cutler Street.

The original log cabin was incorporated into the plan.

Today these building house professional offices, shops, and restaurants.

This is a beautiful neighborhood. It started with four hungry miners. They decided to take a "Last Chance." They went to find gold. That was their last chance. They became rich: 19 million dollars. This is why these neighborhood is do beautiful.

Most of the homes have red bricks. There are nice flowers as well.

It is attractive and the Morelli bridge still stands.

This is a must see. It is for free.

You've got to stop by this place. The history is so cool! Don't pass this by. A good reminder of how spoiled we are with modern conveniences and comforts.

This is a very short jaunt up one side and down in the middle of this historical Reeder's Alley. Brick buildings look to be in fairly good shape, so glad the city saved this historical area. Well worth your time in Helena.

This seems like a perfect date-night kind of a place. Dinner at Karmadillos, walk through a picturesque alley of historic row houses, and pretty scenery to snap a few pictures--albeit on your phone ;) Love it!
