There is a lot of history here. The Fort was home to a company of Buffalo Soldiers during the Apache wars and later the site of a state-of-the-art TB hospital in the early 1900s. A well-curated museum is located the the 3-story Victorian mansion assigned to the medical director and his family. Open from 10-2 on Saturdays staffed by descents. Donations accepted. Classic war movies screened free in old theater on the grounds (Saturday’s, summer). Hiking trails accessible on forest service land nearby.

Current volunteer status limits operating hours to just a few Saturday morning to early afternoon only. That said, it's worth arranging your schedule to allow for a visit here.
We spent about a half hour with a volunteer who was an amazing interpretive storyteller and thoroughly knowledgeable of the amazing and highly unique history of this post. We spent another hour in the Commander's house, now a museum, and another hour and a half walking the grounds looking at the other remaining buildings and reading all the interpretive displays.

We happened upon the fort by chance. I love old ruins, but this is not old pieces of forgotten places, this has buildings- and a lot of them! There is A statue of a medal of honor winner, a parade ground but what was so sad is the people lived in those buildings! I don’t understand why someone couldn’t come in and repair the buildings and have people repopulate the place. (Lots of soldiers need a home. I mean-Reuse, recycle and reduce waste!)
No one was there, but we found one man who told us where to go and what to see. The cemetery at the too of the hill is taken care of, though and I wish the buildings were!

My dog & I walked behind the old hospital, then the new one. Lots of wide open space, where one can't see even an electric wire! Went sev X a week - I will be forever homesick for the peace & solitude - & wildlife - don't ever disturb a javalena! This is a beautiful area - don't expect turista things, thank heaven!

The remains of multi-generations of this fort. It chaged "ownership" and purpose many times. Only open about once a week; check on days and hours.

When we travel, if there is a Historic Fort in the area, we will always visit it. As this is not listed under "Attractions/Things to do" in Silver City (and yet, it is so close), we would not have been aware of it, but for the brochure in the Hotel lobby. Usually, when something is this close to a larger area, it is included as a nearby attraction. I did not think it had been listed, until I went to write the review.
This Fort stands on 468 acres, and when we drove in, it definitely, looked like a Fort in those Western movies, my husband loves so much. The clusters of buildings, open spaces, and the Parade Grounds, all evoke the history of this military post.
We came on a very hot day, and did not expect to stay too long, however, we were there over two hours. There is one building (Museum), which is open to visitors on the weekend. Guided tours are available every Saturday, during the summer months. One can, also, do a self-guided tour. The docent told us that General John Pershing was assigned to this post straight out of West Point.
After our tour of the building, and talk with the docent, we drove around the Fort, and visited the National Cemetery. As one drives around, one gets such a good sense of life at that time.

the fort is very interesting especially if you like a quiet place to look at old buildings and old foundations. the museum is very nice, open on a limited schedule[sometimes you can get a special showing, if you contact them ahead of time.] the cemetery is well maintained and very pretty. if you have been here before you will either be mad because the neat hospital is gone and now just a weedy field as i am. or you may be happy it is gone.

On our way from the nearby Gila Cliff Dwellings, we stopped here to look at the now abandoned fort. History of the fort tells us that the famous General John J. Pershing was a young officer here, as this was his first assignment. The fort is mostly well preserved, though the buildings are not open to the public. The nearby National Cemetery is also quite beautiful to tour. Many buried here around 1880's. On the road which goes around the base, there are plaques and markers worth reading, which explains the importance of this fort when it was built. Well worth the 30-minute stop to take a glimpse of the past.

Beautiful place with so much history. TB recovery hospital and also where the buffalo soldiers were stationed. Volunteers were sprucing up the whole site for the yearly reunion. The museum was not open but one of the volunteers was so kind and gave us our own private tour. This historic site should definitely get more help and funding to kept it preserved for future generations.
