Another beautiful hike in Hocking Hills! Be prepared for a ton to stairs and steep drop offs. Unfortunately when we visited, all of the waterfalls were dried up. While amazing, I can't even imagine how beautiful this hike is with the water flowing! An absolute must when visiting the area!

Great hike and a mile and a quarter in length. Hike down in and then up along the ridge. Stone bridge and cliffs viewing. Bathroom and nice paved parking. So want a rim hike but not a long one great spot.

My favorite of the Hocking Hills trails because of the views. Also less crowded. Trail is more rugged than the others, though. Parts are smooth and level but you have to hike from the gorge base to the rim, so lots of steep climbing (downhill and uphill) onto steps that are sometimes unlevel rocks or steps that are too small. We're moderately active in our 60's so we liked the challenge but I'm glad I had my trekking poles. It would have been easy to lose my balance. Wouldn't recommend for small children or those out of shape. Could be very dangerous if slippery and there's no guard rail along the cliffs. Also, outhouses were pretty bad, probably due to a high volume weekend.

So beautiful! This trail is a little tricky, but so worth it! We went first thing in the morning and it was very quiet. Definitely do both the gorge and the rim for the full experience.

People who really like to have a lot of choices, challenging trails, and a lot to see would enjoy this very much. Unfortunately, it was our last day of hiking and it was too much for me. There are steps and stairs everywhere, most made out of uneven rock. Because I'm short, it was difficult to step up on some of these because they were too high. But other people did just fine. Before we left home, we printed out maps and directions that said there 2 trails--the gorge and the rim, and the gorge is easier. But now the park has combined these trails and made it one-way so that you can't go back. This makes it a more difficult trail.

So beautiful! First time at this trail- Lower Trail. It was breathtaking and there were not many people. I cannot wait to go back and try the upper trail next!

Steep trails but well worth it with the views! Our first trail we did here in Ohio! Easy to find and park. I downloaded the trail app and it provided us with the GPS location.

This was our last hike for the weekend and the drive was worth it- Hocking Hills should get better signage for this destination- can be hard to find with no cell service!! Trail had a bunch of old and broken stairs and rocks - but it was still a great hike in a beautiful location- we took the rim trail and did the trails in between- elevation changes were pretty drastic and fun- cool cave in the middle!!! It’s definitely worth the ride!

I seen some say there is a small paved section for wheelchairs. Does anyone know the length of this part and if it would be worth the drive? I already know about Ash and Conkle's but would like to take my parents a few more places while we are there. Thank you!

Not paved, it's considered a "rugged" trail. Lots to climb over and streams without bridges.

Firstly, thank you for this excuse to research and read some excellent literature about my home!
Secondly, I found that Cantwell Cliffs was named after the Cantwell family, one of the earliest settlers of the Hocking County region from Virginia (probably German settlers, potentially Scotch-Irish). Some accounts say it is named after Joseph, the older brother, but one of the younger brothers (Josiah) died in Cantwell Cliffs. If it was Joseph, he married one of the richest girls in town (Maria Iles) and got both a landmark (the cliffs) AND a city (Ilesborough) named after him.
If you would like to dig deeper, TripAdvisor will not let me post website links in my answer so you can Google "Early History of Hocking County" by Francis Gordon (it's a Master's Thesis from 1940! so cool!) or "'Joseph Cantwell' and 'Cantwell Cliffs'"
Hope this helped!

Planning a quick trip there this summer with two 7-year-olds. Can children that age handle this area?
Опубликовано 27 марта 2015 г.
There are many Hocking Hills sites that are suitable for small children; Old Man's Cave comes to mind with wide, fairly level paths. Cantrell Cliffs rim path is somewhat primitive with several erosion areas on the paths and spots very close to cliffs. I would be hesitant to have small children hike at Cantwell Cliffs or the rim path at Conkle's Hollow.
