I love all things history, and having just recently purchase my first antique coverlet, I wanted to see this museum. Oh my, what a treat. They were exhibiting the comparison between coverlets and quilts with the same patterns. We spent a long time looking at everything. They even have antique looms that coverlets were made on. My husband weaves so they interested him. I was amazed to learn that they have over 600 coverlets in their collection and one day they will have mine. We enjoyed the museum immensely and highly recommend it to those who enjoy textile antiques.

Thank you, Karen. We look forward to seeing you here again. Our newest exhibition, just installed, features 98 coverlets, with the emphasis on color. Coverlet weavers certainly did not limit themselves to red, white and blue, and this is a great display. Exhibition catalogs (title: STILL COLORFUL AFTER ALL THESE YEARS) are available.

Hard to rank this museum. If you like quilts you will find this museum really interesting. These are not quilts but woven bed covers mostly from the mid 19th century. We found the experience very educational and a piece of history. You can go through the museum in less than 1 hour

We went to Bedford just to go to this museum, because my wife has a coverlet from her great-great-great aunt - 1845. The people at the museum told us all about the person who wove the coverlet, the type it was, and they were even familiar with her family who were prominent in her town back then.
We learned an awful lot about how coverlets were made.
We thought the museum would be small, but it is actually quite large with many coverlets from the first half of the 19th century and looms also.
We're from far away from Bedford, but we are becoming members to support this museum in its work.
Pay them a visit if you are in the area.

If you love America History and textiles you will enjoy the National Museum of the American Coverlet. The exhibit on display at our visit combined quilts and coverlets of the 1800’s. This was an unusual display, quilts and coverlets aren’t displayed together as they are considered two different Americana art forms. Coverlets were an industry produced be male weavers for profit and quilts were created in homes by women for household use. The history and display was wonderful.

Thank you, "harned,," for your comments. According to noted researcher and collector Virginia Gunn, this exhibition is "one of the first in-depth exhibitions that focuses on the visual connections between the designs and motifs featured on figured and fancy coverlets and on appliqued quilts made in America from 1830-1870 - the golden age for Rococo-Revival bed coverings." We are honored to include quilts from her collection, augmenting coverlets from the Museum. This has been a wonderful opportunity for us to demonstrate, side by side, the striking similarities (and differences) in the two types of bedcovers, their makers and their history. We truly appreciate the popular response to this display.

I just found out the difference between a coverlet and a quilt. This is not a quilt museum, although they show several applique quilts. Housed in a large old school built in 1859 to serve Bedford, PA this is a medium-sized exhibit of 100 items. Coverlets are woven on looms, sometimes in one piece, more often in halves that are then stitched together to form a piece large enough to cover a bed. This exhibit shows many fine examples woven from the early to late 1800's by both professional and home weavers. The colors range from the typical blue and white or tan, to more colorful combinations, including green and shades of red and orange. One coverlet was aqua and white, an unusual and beautiful combination. The display includes several old looms, both large and small. At least one used the punch card system to achieve the desired pattern. An array of spinning wheels, several unique ones I've never seen before, as well as other tools necessary for preparing wool, flax (linen) and cotton for weaving are on display. The price is ten dollars for adults, a bit high, but the building funds needs it. There is a gift shop offering handwoven items, plus related items. Ample free parking is next to the building. Note: Several granite steps lead up to the door, but no ramp for disabled.

Thank you for your kind words, John. I would like to clarify one note, however - although our front entrance does not include a ramp, we do have a side door with no steps. Just let us know and we are always happy to show you the way. We also have wheelchairs available. Nowadays with so many folks having hip and knee replacements, these are important considerations. We want all our visitors to have a most enjoyable experience here!

14 members of our Corvette Club converged on this wonderful little museum and everyone walked away with a newfound respect for the early settlers of the area. The exhibits are incredible. The stories that are told are awe inspiring and the entire building is chocked-full of real life newspaper clippings, historical artifacts and authentic tools, weapons, maps and transportation items. If you're in the area, please stop in and see what these fine folks have to offer. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the great review, Michael, but we have no weapons, maps or transportation items. Are you thinking of another location? The Corvette Club folks have indeed been here, though, just not recently. You are most welcome to stop by again - we love you too!

We stopped to have my wifes great great grandmothers coverlet evaluated. Melinda and her husband were very helpful in providing information on the age and weaver who could have made this coverlet.

As our name suggests, we love antiques and have been talking about a visit to the National Museum of the American Coverlet for a few years now. Today was the day and what a day it was! The museum is housed in the former Common School building at 322 South Juliana St. in Bedford, Pennsylvania. Upon entering the museum we were greeted by Laszlo Zonger. We told him that we were antique dealers from western PA and wanted to learn more about coverlets. He seemed delighted and asked how much time we had. "All day," we replied and he said, "pull up a chair!" He began in
1801 in France and two hours later he was explaining the connection between coverlets and "hanging chads." You'll have to talk to Laszlo yourself to find the connection - it's certainly worth it!
Now on to the museum. Melinda Zonger, the Museum Director, and Curator was so helpful to answer any questions we had and show us examples of different kinds of weaving. The current exhibit, FLORA BOREALIS, features "a variety of trees, flowers, vines and potted plants depicted in (about 95) coverlets." As an antique dealer, I have seen and handled many beautiful coverlets, but the coverlets in this collection took my breath away. AND, I was assured there were many, many more to be seen.
This Museum is a gem and we will be visiting again and again! Many thanks to Laszlo and Melinda!!

Beautifully displayed coverlets fill the walls of this museum. Information on each coverlet is easy to read near each display. There are antique looms, beds, and fiber tools also on display.

The owners are passionate about the coverlets. They have been collecting their own coverlets and are well connected to others who often loan their collections to the museum for display.

The museum is located in an old elementary school. The setting is quite unique and definitely a place of learning. In addition to wonderful displays there are sometimes classes and talks related to weaving and coverlets.
