What a great trail to bike! We parked at TC Jester Park on a Saturday morning, rode toward downtown, and then joined up with some of the other trails (Heights and Buffalo Bayou that runs between Allen Parkway and Memorial). Overall, we did 26 miles. Of all the trails we have explored in Houston, this is probably my favorite as it is a nice and wide with lots to see. It does cross a couple streets, but just stop and press the cross button and look out for cars. If you leave from the TC Jester Park the path has a few cracks but then joins up with a nice wide main path. Whenever you approach an overpass and have two choices - to go up or down - just stay low and you’ll stay along the bayou. If you go up, most likely you’ll end up at street level. This strategy worked 99% of the time for us ... although once we came to a dead-end. The trail also has plenty of signs directing you to the right paths as it splits off in a few places. We did get a little lost in the Heights area, so be sure to look at a map before you go. Next time, we will leave from TC Jester and go in the opposite direction so we can explore that. There are lots of other cyclists, runners, walkers, families, and even fishermen on this trail. Just make sure you go to the left when you pass and call out “on your left” or ring your bell. Even with all the others, it didn’t seem overly crowded. However if you like to avoid people, Sunday mornings would likely be even less.

This trail has been extended past my neighborhood, so I can ride all the way to downtown Houston, about 15 miles.
It also goes further West up the bayou banks and the concrete stops before a flood control district detention lake system. That does not have to stop you if you have the right bike and the experience is worth it.
I ride this trail regularly and have done for the last three years and have a piece of advice.
Pay attention, I was robbed at gunpoint once, and they got me under a road bridge with limited sight lines. The thieves were caught immediately and I got my belongings back, but I was lucky. Ride solo at your own risk.

Biking in Houston really needs to be a stand alone TA attraction; as a visitor I'm impressed with the effort (and success) that makes this a biking friendly area. There are over 125 miles of biking trails developed and maintained by the Houston Dept. of Parks & Rec. along with bike lanes on many streets, bike rentals, bike tours and bike lanes on many streets. Biking along the Bayou trail system is a wonderful introduction to many small parks and areas of interest; while offering a glimpse into how many locals choose to recreate.
While we were fortunate to be visiting family who have a multitude of bikes you'll find bike rentals (and tours) if you search the web and there is even a bike rental system (similar to Paris) where you can pick up and drop off bikes and various park location stands with a prior reservation or a swipe of your credit card.
This is just my second visit to Houston, but I'm convinced that in this heat biking beats walking if you're looking for exercise. I would also note that there must be some very dedicated and effective volunteer groups involved to reach this level of bike friendliness (thank you!)

I finally had the opportunity to bike this trail and I couldn't be more pleased. The view is wonderful and there are plenty of pit stops for breaks. Be sure to take you camera for Houston's skyline!

This trail gives you are great scenic view of the area and the bayou. It has been paved so the road is great for biking and running as well as walking on a beautiful Spring or Fall day.

This trail has always been good but since they have completely redone it and added the MIT Bike path it is a great place to exercise or just walk thru to have a picnic.

I'll be coming from League City to ride. Where can I park and what areas are safest for a solo rider?

If you park anywhere South of 43rd and ride South from there all is good. There is just one little patch near Pinemont that is a tiny problem, but the trail is well traveled and for that stretch find somebody to tag a long with if you feel the need.
If you do go North, at Alabonson there is a bridge over the bayou into the Inwood sub division green space (old golf courses) which is worth the trip.
On TC Jester just before 43rd there is plenty of parking at the swimming pool and rec. center.
