We love this place. It has such beautiful mountain views and hiking up to see the wild ponies is always fun. The visitor center is quite interesting too. Stay for a couple hours or spend the night in the campground.

Great park. Enjoyed the trails, especially the Rhododendron Trail and Horse Trail that leads up to where the AT crosses it. Even saw the wild ponies.

Breath taking views and there were a lot of people walking around this area. The amount of people weren't too much were you're constantly shoulder to shoulder with people which was nice. A lot of the pet owners walking around would ask if they can touch my esa pet and they would ask if they want to socialize her with their dog (which I really appreciated). 1000% will try going back to visit again! There are even some bouldering routes you can try out in this area that aren't a super far hike in to it.

Grayson Highlands State Park exceeded my expectations. I thought it was going to be a good and fun experience, but it was more than that. I had an unforgettable experience and will cherish my time there. I walked several trails that offered vistas and a waterfall. You can also see wild horses which I had never seen before prior to this. A great park for all!

Purchased a senior pass for one year to state parks, figured it will be worth it. First visit the ponies were right at the rhododendron trail head with two foals! Than we drove to top to the visitor center and gift shop. Next day went and hiked the rhodadendron trail to the horse trail up to the gate where you exit the park. Thats where the ponies are, two foals, a pregnant momma and many others. Hiked back down on the AT and part of the AT towards the rocks. Went to the Homestead and checked that out and had a picnic lunch. Next up a waterfall hike and maybe more.

My family visited on the past rainy, cold Friday. Parked at the Massie Gap lot and hiked up the Rhododendron Trail. Easy, uphill path. Saw a couple groups of ponies in the distance. Will totally return on a different trip with better weather!

The visitor center and country store were closed. The roads were clear but it had definitely snowed and temperatures were threatening to remain below freezing. Was this really necessary? Yes, and it was amazing. The frozen waterfall was awesome to behold - just a tad slow to get there. The Pinnacles offered views that are the best around - it was stunning. We just scratched the surface of this gorgeous park but what we saw was amazing leaving us with lifelong memories. Highly highly highly recommend!

Totally worth the $7 admission. Easy hike to see the wild ponies. We are planning to go back in the spring and hopefully see baby ponies.

Beautiful State park! Excellent view, and the wild ponies is the best part!! They offer easy trail and hard one too, the rangers are very friendly and helpful. The sign on trail are very informative and you will never get lost.

We are coming to camp for 3 nights in a few weeks from out of state. We have a Ford transit van (it’s tall) and will be pulling a pop up camper trailer. I’m wondering, how are the mountain roads? Think we’ll have problems on any twisty turny passes? Has me nervous, but my husband is an excellent driver.

Are the tent and cabin sites usually booked a year in advance? It looks like there is no availability all summer, but also having a hard time understanding the booking site on my phone.

We had trouble with the website too and ended up calling directly to the park to get clarification. Hope that helps you. We only booked a few months advance and were fine. Good luck it is worth the visit

I am reading that the hike is 2 miles to see the ponies. Is that in and out? Also, moderate meaning? It seems everyone's definition is different. I really want to see the ponies, but I have some lower back issues. Is the incline extreme? Are there other areas to possibly see them that may be easier to access? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

What trails would be best to take children (5-10 y/o) that would not be too difficult to hike, but would still allow fun outlooks or good spots to see the ponies?

Most of the park trails are moderate or difficult but you shouldn't have to hike much to see the ponies. Generally you can see them near the Massie Gap parking lot and the Rhododendron Trail is short and moderate and a good spot to see them. The best advice is to check with staff when you get to the park because they will normally know where they are hanging out. The ponies may appear tame but are wild and can hurt unsuspecting visitors to think they are domesticated so watch from a distance.

Hi! Are there any lakes or swimming holes nearby?

If you take the waterfall hiking trail, there is a pretty deep pool at the base of the falls.
Also, there is a big state park/lake about half an hour drive from the area of Grayson Highlands. It is called “Hungry Mother State Park.”

Hello! When is the best time of the year to see the ponies? I'd hate to miss them. Thanks in advance!

The ponies are there all year round and usually it would be hard to miss them. However, because of the weather conditions, I recommend June-September.

1. Does it cost $$ to enter the park? 2. What times are the park open on week days?

We paid $7 for parking on 3/29/19.
