This is a great activity as a contrast to visiting all the temples each day. Saroun, the chef, is a delightful person and I was so lucky as to be the only client on my morning. Saroun was very punctual in picking me up at my hotel and we went directly to the market where she told me all about the local vegetables and herbs. We made a few purchases and headed back to a cafe-restaurant: 'The Hive'. Here there is a second floor level, a sort of gallery over-looking the restaurant, where all was set up perfectly to cook. Our menu seems to be the standard which is offered , which is fine as it is all new to westerners in any case! We made banana flower salad, fish amoc and sweet potato and coconut tapioca pudding. It was lots of fun to chat and chop with Saroun! My husband, who had been out bird-watching, arrived just in time to add the finishing touches and we enjoyed a yummy meal together, the fish amoc was especially delicious!! The book of recipes and the 'certificate' are nice extras - and I also bought my 'Cooks with Tuk Tuks' apron. Many thanks to Saroun for everything!

This tour took us to two local markets. At the first, we ate one local dish and a bunch of local fruit. The second market was for insects and BBQ.
Whilst the tour itself is not bad, it's quite expensive for what they actually offer. Moreover, they don't seem to have much of a structure, but instead the tour guide acts as a translator buying whatever the guests would like to try and telling them what it is. She didn't really provide us with a background of the culinary habits of locals but instead was happy to let us lead the tour.
I saw another company doing food tours in Siem Reap and would think that they would be better. (nobody has asked to me write this, I just wish I would have done the tour with the other company myself).
Quite disappointing!

Had the best birthday ever last year!. Cooking with Saroun was really nice. She is a sweet person and wonderful Chef. She showed us the local market, and she was willing to answer all our questions about the ingredients. If you want to experience the real food of Cambodia, don´t miss this amazing cooking class. It was one of the best activities I could have done in my trip to Asia. Thanks Saroun!

We had a fantastic time - we expected a bigger group, but it was just the three of us which was really lovely. Saroun was really helpful and pointed out lots of foods in the market which was new to us and made adjustments to the recipes to accommodate a vegetarian. The recipe book is a lovely mento and the food was delicious and cooking it was very good fun.
The only issue was that we had to get our hotel to call and chase the company as they did not turn up to pick us up as expected.

I clearly should have done a more thorough job checking TripAdvisor before selecting this tour. The only reason this tour is getting a 2 rating instead of 1 is because of Saroun, the sweetest tour guide ever, who clearly did her best to make the best out of a bad situation. Saroun is such a warm and caring person. She kept the conversation flowing for hours with just the two of us, which is already challenging enough in your native tongue, let alone a second language. She showed a genuine interest in me and my life, and it was great hearing a firsthand perspective on life in Cambodia. She was so attentive, constantly checking to make sure I wasn't being run over by an errant motorcycle or tuk tuk. And, she is the only reason I am not pressing for a full refund.
I booked the tour online the day of, but never received any kind of confirmation (or a HEY WE'RE CANCELLING THE TOUR TODAY) email. This should have been my first sign of trouble. I showed up at the Hive anyway at the appointed meeting time just in case, thinking I could snag a spot on the tour. It got closer and closer to 5, and no one was showing up. I asked one of the servers, who grabbed Saroun. Turns out there WAS no tour that day, as I was the only person interested. Maybe it was the rain? Maybe because it's low season? We'll never know. But either way, nobody thought to respond to my email. Saroun offered to take me anyway, but for $45 instead of $35, since I was the only person. Since it was my last day in Siem Reap and I hadn't gotten much of a chance to try the local food, I decided to take a chance and splurge. The whole time, it seemed like a lot of the normal vendors she visited weren't there, maybe because of the rain, who knows.
Sometimes when you gamble, you lose!
Itinerary of visit and GENEROUSLY estimated prices
$2 Tuk tuk to Market 1
$2 chive dumpling - yum!
$1 noodles - bland
$1 crepe - not local!? saw them everywhere in Thailand and China!
$1 a few fruits
$2 Tuk Tuk Market 2
$3 stuffed frog
$1 bamboo wrapped fish cake
$2 turmeric pancake stuffed with veggies
$1 various roasted bugs
$1 bottle of water
$3 Tuk Tuk to hotel
$20 TOTAL COST, I PAID 45!
Again, these are VERY generous estimates on the prices of food, as I'm pretty sure the fruits and bugs were free, and I'm using tourist rates for food and tuk tuks. That leaves over 55% profit for an owner who couldn't even be bothered to send me an email to tell me to find another option for my evening, and probably never even told Saroun that someone was interested in taking the class today. Now that I'm doing more in-depth research on street food tours, I'm realizing we didn't hit on most of the must-try foods, and I didn't even see them available at the markets.
Either way, I feel quite robbed, and the owner is very lucky to have Saroun. Hopefully he gives her a bigger slice of today's profit, because she deserves it.

We wanted to have a bit of local experience and the cooking class is a lot of fun. Our cooking instructors language skills were okay but the printed recipe booklet helped a lot. A bit more effort to explain the different ingredients and other products at the market would be helpful. They can pick you up at your hotel for two dollars which is also handy.

I organised the cooking class months in advance and on the day no one showed up.
I sent another email when it was after pick up time with a reminder of contact details and address of our guest house in case the driver was lost, but no reply or response. And no reply when I emailed to inform that we would not be waiting as we had waited long enough.

We got to learn how to make Banana flower salad, Fish Amok & Sago for dessert. It was the best food we had on our whole trip. We go picked up from our chosen meeting point then take to the local market to collect all the required ingredients. Once done we went to the hotel and went hands on with the cooking. We had an amazing time and would deffinetly do it again!

Chef Saroun is the best. I had a great time. Enjoyed all: the market visit, the cooking back at the restaurant, eating the delicious food. Chef Saroun is funny, very attentive, explained all about the ingredients we were using. I would recommend it!!

Are you holding classes on Monday 11/2?
Опубликовано 8 февраля 2019 г.
Hi there,
I'd love to do a class. My kids and I often cook together, they are 5 and 7 years old. Would we be able to do a class together?
Опубликовано 15 февраля 2016 г.
Hi Ben. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to do it together. It was very relaxed and easy going and the chef spoke good English. Enjoy! Cheers Kay

You mentioned there is a free hotel pick up for the Cooks in Tuk Tuks cooking class in your response to Julie's question, but your website says there is no pick up available. Which is correct? I booked a cooking tour for 10/23 and would like to confirm.
Опубликовано 21 октября 2015 г.
Hi,
If you book it though your hotel they will arrange a pickup.
At last it happened in July 2015 :)
Check with your hotel that's the best way.
Thanks

Hi, just wondering if there is availability for your cooking class on 16 or 17 October? What is the cost for 2 people? How do we book it?
Опубликовано 14 октября 2015 г.
Hi Julie - Thanks for your enquiry. We require a minimum of 2 pax. We do have availability for you for Cooks in Tuk Tuks.
The menu is set and I have included the information below for your interest, Just respond to this email if you would like to book.
Here’s our intro into The RiverGarden's fabulous tours ~
Both are excellent and quite different ...............................................
Cooks in Tuk Tuks Cooking Class and Street Food Tour
Cooks in Tuk Tuks goes to our Local market where you experience the wonderful energy of the local Khmer people doing business and buying food. We do a tour around the food stalls , looking at all the interesting herbs, fruits and vegetables. We then return to The RiverGarden where you will cut and chop.......mix and stir whilst preparing your meal of:
Fresh and delightfully tasty Banana Flower Salad
Creamy Fish Amok with a rice pyramid
Traditional Khmer dessert with Sago , Pumpkin and Coconut milk.
The class begins at 10am and is $25 per person which includes a market tour,
a 3 course Lunch as described above , our well presented ,detailed recipe book and
a Certificate of Excellence ( Drinks are not included )
We include a free pick up and return transport to your hotel.
Pick up is between 9.30am ~ 9.45am from your hotel
Vegetarians are catered for if the Chef is advised in advance of the class
Other stuff you need to know
Please dress respectfully. Skimpy clothes can be offensive to the Khmer people
A hat is always recommended for protection whilst walking around the market
We are only away from the hotel for 1 hour. Water can be purchased along the way and safe drinks can be purchased on the return to the hotel......super!
Our guides are very professional , English speaking with a sense of humour
Some, but not all purchases are made at the market. You are welcome to make your own purchases outside of the hotel "shopping list" and we encourage you to have FUN
The class finishes at about 2pm and you're invited to swim in the pool, talk to the ducks and scruff the puppies
Street Food works particularly well with a group of people
The concept of Street Food is to imitate the Khmer as they enjoy eating. They purchase a little dumpling from one side of town , some noodles from their favourite noodle lady and then they will stop somewhere else for a special fruit or a snack of deep fried crickets. They end up sharing their purchases with friends and family and this is the experience we attempt to create with you
The Street Food tour leaves The RiverGarden at 5pm and finishes around 7.30pm which includes time munching and crunching some of the delightful treats we have purchased on the tour ~ Friends are made as food is shared. You get to walk with the locals, eat amongst the chaos of the street and experience the unique way the Khmer people enjoy the delights of their Street Food. It's awesome!
The cost is $25 per person including safe food purchases. ( We do not include drinks )
We provide a pick up and return transport to your hotel. Pick up is between 4.30 ~4.45pm
