The Methan Mani is a beautifully designed antique clock which one can see exactly opposite when standing at the entrance of Padmanabhaswamy temple. The clock is still functional and at the stroke of every hour a bearded man pops out and is hit on his cheeks by two goats.

We stood in front of the clock for a long time. They goats don't hit each other or the bearded man does not protrude his tongue as said, but it did move a bit. Time is not the exact hour, some 5-10 minutes later.
I read it was intended to mock Muslims during that era. Though built in a bad intention, it is still a wonder. Especially in those times when technology was limited, it does require tremendous skill.

The "Methan Mani" is located near the Padmanabha Swamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. To see it, one has to stand before the temple entrance and look in the opposite direction of the Padmatheertha pond. It is on the top of the Old Fort Palace. The unique feature of the clock is the presence of a bearded man on top of the dial who opens his mouth corresponding to every hour and two rams hit his cheek and forcing him to close his mouth. This action is co-oridnated with the hourly chimes.
The clock still works perfectly, and strikes each hour in a day. The clock now runs on software developed by the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (CDIT). The Methan Mani remains a popular landmark in the city with the chimes audible around the locality.

Old Clock supposed to ridicule Moslems. When the clock strikes the hour two goats hit the head of a typical Kerala Moslem (Meethan) from both sides. Indicates that religious Harmony was not even in old times when this clock built apprently not so good even in Travancore. Or was it a jab at the Muslim ruler Tipoo who dared to attack Travencore? Dogs were traditionally named Tipoo in Kerala just like the English liked to name their Shepard Dogs "Kaiser" to insult the German Kaiser, their traditional enemy.

It was a child hood fancy to be in the area to watch the clock when strikes the time. The two goats which striking the man in the middle at the ringing time caught my fancy in my childhood. Years later, after shifting from Trivandrum, when I was there, I found that the system was n0n functional. Since the original technology was not known, there was no way it could be reapired and re commissioned. Recently, I saw it working again but was told that the technology was a new one and not the original. Anyway, that it works itself is a good thing to know.

The Methan Mani on top of the old fort palace by the side of Padmatheertha Pond near Padmanabha Swamy Temple was installed by Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma Maharaja and it was working when I visited this place during my school picnic. It's still working and the name Methan Mani may have been given because of the image of a bearded man's face where two sheep hit when the clock strikes on an hourly basis. It's technology is not known and is believed to have purchased from Madras and now it is being run on software developed by CDIT. While visiting Padmanabha Swami Temple most people make it a point to see Methan Mani and wait till the clock strikes.
