Pasar Payang is Kuala Terengganu’s main & largest market. It opens daily from as early as 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Apparently, the building has been renovated for the comfort of its visitors & merchants.
The 1st time my partner & I saw the huge building was during our morning walk from our hotel to Chinatown. We stopped by briefly for at least 30 minutes to see what was available & left after zeroing in on a couple of stalls or kiosks which required a 2nd visit.
I was looking for Batik kaftans & dry food items such as “keropok”, “serunding”, “bepang”, “popiah simpul”, mixed anchovies & cashew nuts for those at home. We came back after freshening up in our Hotel & visited the selected stalls again. The Batik designs were artistically beautiful & I was able to grab 3 pieces for RM100.00. You can haggle at the market but if the prices are on promotion, the shop owners won’t budge. I was very happy with the price as the material was of good quality. Since I was running out of cash, I was able to use the QR Code payment system which was fast & hassle-free. As for the dry items, I was successful in haggling, bringing prices down. The shop owner also accepted the QR Code payment method. It seems to be the preferred way of doing business in the building. This is probably due to the pandemic situation.
We did not explore Pasar Payang much as we were pressed for time. Hence, we did not explore the 1st floor which is a haven for those looking for articles of clothing such as Batik, songket, silk & traditional handicrafts. Traditional handicrafts can include copper products, rattan to “Keris”, a Malay weapon. Copper products used to be very popular once before. Then, it began to spiral down. Now, it’s making a comeback. We can see cookware & wedding paraphernalia made from copper. Rattan products are also gaining prominence.
The ground floor is mainly an area for wet goods, local desserts & food stalls. However, one can also find many shops selling Batik kaftans, jewellery or women’s accessories.
Overall, it’s where locals & tourists shop to satisfy a need or want. Best of all, there will be many varieties of the things that you want to get. I will definitely come back in future.

Nothing special here. A lot of kerepoks, house coats and toys. You buy a lot but still the same price. Can't bargain and they don't smile at all...at last u don't feel happy.

Few years ago, the vendors are selling their products under the canopy along the roadside. Now they have moved to an indoor building. It is cleaner and cooler. But they have used to throwing the rubbish every where. Some of the vendors are rude and not friendly. If you have no intention to buy from the stall, DON’T ask the price! They will pull a long face at you.

The Pasar Payang Market has moved into a large new building with everything on one level ( rather than 4-5 levels in previous market. Building is massive and 3 stories high but stalls are only on ground floor and rest of height is open. Appear to be less stalls than the previous market. There are food stalls at the back of the market and a market for some fresh food is in a smaller area to the north ( although fish is sold in the main building. Good range of items to buy.

This is an interesting place and somehow reminded me of Talat Tonlamyai in CNX albeit Tonlamyai is more of a Thai twist while this is more of Terengganu local twist. However, what really sadden me is, in this market, the selling of turtle eggs are allowed and it is very unfortunate that the Terengganu state government and Malaysian federal government allows this detrimental trade to be alive and persists. The banned on selling of turtle eggs only applies to the Leatherback turtle, but fyi, Leatherback turtle hasn’t been landing or seen in waters around Terengganu and its surrounding island for years. The last time I’ve seen one during scuba diving was in the year circa 2000s.

Lots of Pantai Timur traditional foods and crafts sold here. Kerepok Lekor, Keropok Keping, batik and so on. There were also a row of gold shops and I noticed that some police were monitoring the market because it had cases of sellers cheating on scales.

The dessert store is named Snowybowl Cafe. It is a very small store along Chinatown. It mainly serves desserts like snow bowl which comes in variety of flavour. The taste is quite good and it is a very good place for gathering.

Assalamualaikum.
