So much to see! Wish we had longer to stay!
Bright birds and beautiful water.
Could be fun as a solo trip or with friends!

There isn't a lot to do in Madang so a trip out here was something to do when we were visiting on a cruise. 'Wildlife sanctuary' is a bit of a misnomer, I'd say rather a garden, with a small stream and a cave entrance, however for 10 PNG Kina - less than $3 it was worth the visit. To get there it took a 40 minute drive along a road which started with huge pot holes then suddenly became a well tarmacced road. The drive to the sanctuary lets you see something of the area, the canning plants, housing and roadside markets. At the sanctuary we saw eels in the stream and turtles by the cave. The garden had some pretty flowers and several dragonfly but on our visit only a handful of butterflies.

What a unique spot. Bit of a drive on a bumpy road, about 40minutes from MADANG. Lots of traditional living to witness along the way. Stopped at a local family and asked permission to visit the butterflies (10 Kina per person). Crossed the road and walked up through well maintained gardens to a water cave. Along the way white algae appeared in the water and the smell of Sulfur was strong. Plenty of butterflies, and in the water itself blue turtles that come when the local calls them. Back across the road the family has native birds and other animals (we were in a rush so couldn’t hang around). The ladies tap on dishes over the river and a giant eel usually appears - not while I was there though.

Yes, there were the big eels and turtles, but no birds, no bats, no butterflies.

You have to bring fish for feeding the eels and banas for feeding the turtles with you.

Beautiful cold water springs. Turtles were active but the eels that the guide mentioned must have been napping and even food didn't bring them out for a visit. Interesting location with great flora in the area.

こんな美しい場所があるのか!と本当に感動しました。エメラルドグリーンの水に鳥のさえずりと緑。泉には野生のうなぎやカメがたくさん泳いでいました。

We stopped here as part of a half-day tour organized by the Melanesian Tourist Service (operating at out of Madang Resort). We're Madang residents and went along on the half-day with a local friend and another visitor.

This place is interesting and you do see some wildlife. This include fish and eels in the creek, and turtles in a cave-like opening in the mountain wall nearby. The creek originates from somewhere in the back of the opening and due to the sulfur in the rocks, there is a high sulfur content in the water. You can smell it in the air (but it is nowhere near as strong as, say, the sulfur smell you get at volcanoes). Interestingly, the sulfur has encrusted much of the underwater rock with white crystalline deposits. With the sunlight sparking on the very-clear water, it was actually pretty.

To be honest, it wasn't anything overly fancy or much to shout about. On the other hand, there really aren't many tourism attractions in the area. If you left your resort and went here only I expect you'd be disappointed. But as a stop along the way as part of another trip, it's nice to do. As always, great scenery for photography. The landscaping in the area is very nicely kept up and the park, though small, is really quite beautiful.

There are public toilets -- outhouses, really -- but unless you're quite accustomed to what you'll find in PNG you wouldn't want to use them.

The park fee was included in our tour price.

Our tour guide stopped at a road side market along the way and bought a piece of smoked sausage. He used pieces of this to entice the eels out for viewing. I was surprised we were actually able to get a few photos of them.

SIDE NOTE: when we visited our tour guide spelled the name of the place "V - A - L - E - K", not as it is spelled on this listing. It's probably a transliteration glitch from Tok Pisin to English ... the "B" and "V" are interchangeable. I didn't see any sign on the premises giving the name. If you considering a tour and this place is listed, it's probably the same place regardless of how they spell it.

We only saw one small portion of the park, the sulfur stream with its eels and turtles. The other strange thing here is the white algae growing in the water. We were here as part of an excursion that went to several other places. Although we didn't see much, we did like what we saw.

The cold sulfur springs make for fairly interesting viewing. The caretakers are pleasant. They'll show you where the turtles and fish live. The clear water and caves make for an attractive setting. Nice to visit if you're in the area, but not worth going out of your way for a visit.
