Huge park with lots of trails. Lakes are way low as compared to years ago but this is just a great get away to leave the hassle and bustle of life. At dusk there are deer everywhere

We went tent camping in Gold Head State Park in mid-June of 2022.

The first thing you should know is that the camp sites are HUGE. We stayed in Site #22 on the Turkey Oak loop. It was under a canopy of oak trees and realtively shaded most of the time. I noticed that sites #27 through #36 are facing the morning sun, and so those may be better choices in the winter when it's chilly. Most of the sites have electric and water hookup (the ones that dont are listed as such on the website so read carefully), so we ended up bringing a decent sized fan with us and that made it bearable in the summer. We were right near the bath house but far enough away so that we didn't hear people walking there. Most of the sites on Turkey Oak are plenty close enough to the bath house.

We rented a canoe and paddled around Little Lake Johnson, but I have to warn you, after an hour, you'll have been around the lake twice and be done with it. It's small and relatively clogged with water lillies. We also biked around the property some, and hiked the ravine trail (which is pretty) out to the mill site (which is not really anything to see, if you're going to do it, just do it for the sake of hiking).

The bathrooms and showers at the Turkey Oak bath house were very clean and always functional. The urinals don't have dividers at that bath house, in case you're shy and care about that. The showers use a double set of curtains (with a small changing cubical and then the actual shower past that) for privacy.

We saw wild turkeys, lots of deer (they really get brave and dont even move too far away), and plenty of birds. Our camp was raided by racoons about 1am and we had to run them off. So plenty of wildlife.

For those out of state who may not know, summer tent camping in Florida is pretty brutal. Basically, if I wasn't sitting in front of our fan, I was dripping sweat. We had to take the fan into the tent at night to sleep. One night was cloudless though and the view of the stars with no light pollution was so amazing.

We had one group of neighbors next to us, but many of the adjacent sites were empty even on weekend nights. It's a pretty quiet and spacious state park.

The ranger station sells firewood for $8 a bundle (but it's kiln dried and lights easy) and $3 for a 7lb bag of ice. That helped make things easier. The park staff were all very friendly and we enjoyed every interaction we had.

Great representation of old natural Florida - spent two nights in the campground, very clean bathhouse and overall.

RV spaces seem too close together, but a great place, super friendly staff and volunteers.

Great trails to hike or bike, picnic, dip in the lake, cook on the grills, build a fire in the pits, go out looking for deer, rabbits, birds. Fun place for your fur babies. RV sites are good, albeit uneven in the Lake Loop. No sewer hookups, but there is a dump station. Bath house/bathrooms are clean. Fishing isn't easy; overgrown weeds so lake access is limited. Playground and picnic shelters may be closed due to pandemic, so check the park alerts about closures. Park staff are super nice and helpful.

The landscape is very interesting with long leaf pines, turkey oaks and native grass. We saw lots of birds including turkey and an owl. We stayed in one of the cabins which was rustic but comfortable. We were a little disappointed that the water level in the lake was so low. But the hiking trails were good and loved the Ravine Trail. We brought our bikes and bikes in the park but also bike on the path that follows SR 21. The park is also close to the lake Butler to Palatka State Trail.

Another beautiful Florida State Park. Our trip here was well worth the drive! This beautiful gem of a park is located approximately half way between Jacksonville, Fl and Gainesville, Fl.

This park offers a lot of nice places to do some hiking! There are abundant trails to follow through woods, lakefront and spring fed streams. Be sure to take the time to find the location of the old mill that was one time located in the park. There are numerous places along the way to sit and just enjoy the sights and sounds of the woods.

This park offers RV parking in a number of spacious camp sights, tent and primitive camping locations as well as a fairly good number of cabins that are also available for rent. No matter what your camping preference happens to be, you will surely find it here. There is also a large play area with swings and such for those with families to enjoy. Be sure to visit the "Sasquatch" with the big red eyes nearby and grab a few photos with him! Don't worry, he's very friendly!

One of the other nice things we experienced at this park, was the wildlife. There is quite a range of what you can expect to see here. One early evening we were lucky enough to have a group of deer casually walk through the woods just outside of our camp sight. They acted as though nothing was out of the ordinary so be prepared to possibly see them yourself.

The only gripes or complaints I have about this facility are as follows:

1. The dump station is located in the park in a very inconvenient location from where the RV camp sights are located. If not bad enough, when you get to the location, it's poorly located in and amongst some very large trees. For those with larger RVs or 5th wheel rigs, getting n and close to the connection is tricky.

2. The entrance to the park is very near the main road and the narrow park gates form a very effective bottleneck. During check out time, incoming campers and those trying to leave have to vie for the the limited space near the entrance.

3. Not necessarily the fault of the park, but my GPS had this park actually located about 15 miles south of where the park actually is located. Possibly check the location using multiple tools before just trusting the GPS!

I visited/camped here on Feb 2020 (Valentines Day weekend) with a group of friends. It was a very beautiful park/campground. The trails and ravines were beautiful and the weather was great! I was in a GINORMOUS site (# 39)
Bathrooms were clean and always stocked with paper! The trash/dump was a bit far from the main campground but at least they recycle at the bins.
BAD cell/tv reception at my site (Verizon) BUT, AT&T was good.
Some friends had sites near the lake and the view was awesome!
The weird/negative comment that I have is that the water hook-up is waaaaay too far from the actual site! It was not on the same side as the electrical connection, so I had to drag out another 25ft extension to my already long 50ft hose.
Otherwise I Will love to come back here and get this same site or if not some of the other BIG sites.
