Caerwent Roman Town has fallen into relative obscurity in terms of tourist attractions due to the famous Caerleon Legionary Fortress (Isca) being just 20 minutes away. The site has 5 key areas: the Courtyard House, the shops/houses, the Temple, the Basilica and the town walls, all of which are displayed on the map at the free car park. Each of these has a useful information sign to describe the remains, and the wooden building on the car park has a number of signs describing Britain's Roman history. Nearest to the car park are the Courtyard House and other houses/shops. Both of these are exclusively foundations, however with the help of the signs it is possible to interpret the footings and understand how the buildings would have appeared. A short walk down the road is the temple. Again just foundations, but a unique site with a clearly visible layout and helpful sign. Behind it is the basilica and forum. With slightly more substantial remains, the significance of this area is evident due to its size. Finally are the impressive town walls. It is possible to walk a substantial length of these walls, both in front of and on top of them. The scale of these fortifications even now is impressive, in addition to the construction methods being clearly visible where stone has fallen away. In the Southeastern corner is a Norman motte, a feature that contextualises the age of Caerwent's remains as they predate this by 700 years. While the car park is sizeable, no other facilities exist on site so any necessities must be brought to the site. Having been to Caerleon's Isca and been impressed by that, I can confidently say Caerwent's Venta Silurum is an amazing historical site that must be seen if nearby. Its spread layout may not be suited for all, however the site is interpreted well and the remains are spectacular.

The Roman experience is set over the centre of the town - it's not just one site. Tickets can be purchased in the well signed centre where the helpful staff provided a map of Caerwen and the three main places to visit. Everything is very close and walkable. We visited the amphitheatre first then walked to the 'accommodation' ruins. followed by the museum and eventually the roman version of the sports centre where the visual set up is excellent. There was plenty of information set out in a simple way so easy to understand. We really enjoyed the visit. Just beware that the car park by the entrance where tickets are purchases is pay and display and there is a camera to check the time you exit.

Extensive and unspoilt foundations of a Roman town, founded in about AD 75 and thought to have been inhabited by the Romano-British Silures tribe.

Sadly, no museum or visitor centre and, as other reviewers have said, more signage or information boards would be helpful. We printed off the Wikipedia entry for the village so thankfully had some idea what to look for.

Be careful not to miss areas: we wandered around and came across several parts of the site we had not anticipated just from looking at the map displayed.

The church (interesting in its own right), shuts at 5pm, contains other Roman finds from the village.

For those visiting for the first time, be aware there is no café in Caerwent and only limited refreshments available at the pub and post office but there are plenty of places to have a picnic.

There is no charge for the car park (shuts at 5pm) or entry fee to the site.

Earlier reviewers mention a guidebook and visitor centre but we did not see evidence of either, so perhaps someone who lives locally could advise.

Caerwent is a Romano British town that is relatively well preserved. If we're honest, it's mostly floor plans that are left and sections of the town wall but it gives an idea of the layout of a prosperous tribal market town.
This was a bit of a disappointing visit. It probably wasn't helped by being a hot day and having a 3 year old with us but there also seemed to be wilful misdirection for some areas of the site. There were signs to the walls next to the room with the hypocaust, we followed these through a field to find another sign led on its side and all the other exits from the field padlocked shut so we had to retrace our steps.
We didn't see the main section of the town walls which was a shame. There is no cafe on site and no cafe in the town although there is a pub. The car park is easy to miss but is a decent size. Considering the importance of the site I'm surprised that more is not made of it and a better laid out route done to highlight the temple, walls and forum. That being said, each area does have a comprehensive information board, it's just the router between the areas that needs work.

I can't believe it's taken us so long to check out these Roman ruins, but so glad we did.

On a lovely hot and sunny day we seemed to be the only people visiting so not only was it a really interesting visit, it was also so quiet and peaceful with just birdsong to keep us company.

Finished the trip with a pleasant walk around the city walls, ending up in the Coach and Horses.

A great afternoon.

This is a wonderful place to visit. I took my sons (7yo & 11yo) as nearby Caerleon was closed, and was amazed at what we found. Parking is free, as is entrance, and we spent all day wondering around a really varied set of ruins. We'd been studying the Romans during Covid homeschooling, and the boys loved being among real ruins and imaginging what life would have been like in that place (aided by a couple of history books we brought along). It's one of the most complete and varied set of ruins I've seen in the UK and really recommend to anyone interested in Roman history.

We also did the guided walk they offer - great for all ages, although some steps and a little uneven in places. The pub is conveniently located halfway for lunch, and it's family friendly with a great variety of food.

The Romans, after conquering the local Silures tribe in the 70sAD, built for them a town known as Venta, Silurium (Silures Marketplace). Mostly only the footprints of the Roman buildings remain, but you can clearly see where the forum, temple, rows of shops, and an urban villa, stood complete with hypocaust (underfloor heating). There are more Roman artefacts in the local church, and plenty of visual aids to assist your understanding. But the most impressive feature is the town wall, built late in the Roman period, still standing several metres high and enclosing most of the town. The fact that in the intervening centuries local people (descendents of the Silures?) have built houses, pubs, and shops within the square Km of the Roman town is a pity... but life goes on!
There's free parking and you can wander round the old Roman town at your leisure at no cost. A public toilet and several refreshment places are available. Fascinating for anyone who wants the feel of Roman Britain.
