“Spectacular Birding!”

Я провел две ночи в El Copal Reserve, и это было лучшее наблюдение за птицами всей поездки. Птицы, как Snowcap от терраса и затем добраться Унылого - отлично Antbird, Lancebill и Охра - боролась против Antpitta на маршрутах, было невероятным. Когда пришло время уезжать, замечательная пташка, после того, как замечательная пташка продолжала разоблачать задержка нашего графика.Номера стандартные, но хорошее. Вам понадобится какой-то обычный испанский, чтобы общаться и 4 - транспортное средство привода колес, чтобы добраться туда, но он стоит того!

Tenía una muy alta expectativa del lugar y realmente se cumplió, tanto para mi como para mi esposa. El lugar es confortable, la naturaleza exquisita y la atención es de lo mejor.
Doña Patricia cocina delicioso y entablé muy buenas e interesantes conversaciones con don Alberto.
Vale la pena escaparse y relajarse en este lugar lleno de naturaleza.

Birding visit

We only visited here for a couple hours on our way toward San Gerardo de Data. This area is known as a birding hotspot thus explains our interest. We hiked a trail across from the main building. The birding was slow and we didn't linger long as there was a threat of rain in the air. We had some luck but missed out on the Ocellated Antbird as it wouldn't show itself. There actually was a good bit of activity in the trees surrounding the lodge rooms. Might be worth a couple days stay next visit.

Birders Paradise

This place is pretty amazing...its a birders paradise - and a lot can be seen just from the veranda..
Its a basic eco lodge - and they really do mean eco lodge...so don't expect wifi and running mod cons..
The staff are lovely and serve great home cooked/fresh food. The rooms are basic (and you may need to share bunk rooms) but are very comfy and clean. There is nothing to do except listen to the sounds of the night and relax...
Family run - being transformed into a co-op.
Highly recommended!

Birding with Purpose

We visited El Copal on a day trip with guide Cris from Peregrinus Expeditions (reviewed elsewhere on TripAdvisor). While the reserve is difficult to get to, Cris made it easy by providing transportation both ways. The reserve itself is remote, quiet, and beautiful. There is a cabin for rent as well as modest dormitory facilities, and they host college student groups a couple of times per year. This would be an excellent place for students who are studying abroad, doing summer research, mission trips, or similar, and we hope it becomes more widely known. The road through the surrounding area includes many small communities where Cris shared his insights about how the locals live, what challenges they face, and where there is a need for policy reform and/or partnerships with NGOs to help bring about positive changes.
During our visit we saw a wealth of bird species, both in the sunny morning on the balcony and during a rainy hike in the afternoon. Cris knew all the bird calls, which helped locate many species in the dense foliage. Overall, a beautiful place to spend a day or longer immersed in nature.

A True Birding Hotspot

You need to be a committed bio-bum or birder, but if you are, then this place should be at the top of your list.

It's a non-profit reserve, so don't expect anything but the basics. Other reviews spell this out. Very nice people as cooks and caretakers though.

You should have a bird guide even if you know Spanish. You'll be birding by ear on the trails, but lots to look at, including Ochre-breasted Antpitta, Dull-mantled Antbird, and Rufous-browed Tyrannulet. The veranda is fabulous for birds right after a rain. You're at eye-level not more than 10 meters away. Snowcaps are in the garden. Collared Trogons, Rufous-winged Woodpecker, Emerald Tanager, White-ruffed and White-collared Manakins all seen from the veranda.

I consider this place and the San Gerardo Field Station as two of the best birding hotspots in Costa Rica.

Relaxing with beautiful views and good birding

El Copal was the highlight of a very enjoyable holiday in Costa Rica. The sleeping accommodation is basic but if you don't mind that we highly recommend it. The food is wholesome and plentiful, they provide all meals. Birding is very good, we recommend you arrange a bird guide in advance to get the most out of the visit. One thing for drivers - we strongly advise against tackling the road coming through the park from the east, you should access el Copal via Humo from the west.

Es mi segunda visita a este lugar, y volvería las veces que fuese necesario. La paz, la tranquilidad y la libertad que se siente es inigualable... Y si eres amante de la observación de aves, acá podrás disfrutar de muchas especies. Lo recomiendo y estoy seguro que el contacto con la naturaleza les ayudará a disminuir los niveles de estrés. Saludos!

Basic lodge mostly for research

This lodge has a difficult access road so if weather is rainy a 4WD is required. And it rains a lot here. There is one main building with a few small rooms with no private bathrooms, but there is elecrticity and WiFI there. There is another building with two rooms with private baths but no electricity or WiFi. A separate restaurant was nice, but what they serve is what you get. There is one long trail up a hillside, which is nice but the top part is not well-maintained. Bird activity depends a lot of whether trees are fruiting or flowering. Lots of hummingbird flowers near the lodge for viewing. Great to see the Snowcap.

El lugar es idílico, las instalaciones en consonancia, y lo más importante, el personal, muy atento y amable. El sendero que permite visitar el bosque mide 3000 m, pero está escasamente señalizado (por lo tanto siempre queda cierta posibilidad de perderse). Los colibríes vuelan junto a ti en todo momento. Buena experiencia, aunque no especialmente ajustada a precio si valoramos lo que ofrece comparándola con otros lugares similares.

I spent 1 day at El Copal Reserve and it was incredible, the food, birds, the building; everything was very nice. I'll definitely recommend this place, and I'll spent more time with my family there.
