Excellent view and great serenity

Used to be a church but it offers a small patch of paradise. It does look like it leans [and actually does lean] and we are somewhat surprised that it has not attracted the visitors that the leaning tower of Piza does. This is obviously on a smaller scale but is more desirable. Peaceful settings.

The leaning tower of "Winbree"
июнь 2019 г. • Для двоих
Me and Hubby visited here last Sunday morning. It is located next to the beer garden of The Swan Inn (CW5 7NA). There is free roadside parking. The tower is on a Saxon site. It used to be part of the original St. Chad's Church which was demolished in 1833 due to unstable foundations. The Church building was replaced in 1892 but this was eventually demolished for the same reason in 1977.

The solitary square tower (which leans to the north) is now a Grade 2 listed monument. It is 96 feet high and consists of 5 stages. There are small statues of Bishops around the doorway (locked). I liked the wrought iron clock face. Apparently the bells x 6 were cast in 1791.

The lychgate serves also as a war memorial. There was an information board about the history of the village and an extensive graveyard. Well done to the local Tower Preservation Trust for protecting this iconic landmark.

Certainly worth a visit.

The first thing to say about Wybunbury Tower is that the listed postal code didn’t work on my TomTom, which took us to a nearby horse farm. I would suggest therefore that you set your Satnav for the centre of Wybunbury - ‘cos that’s where the tower is.

The tower is situated on an elevated site, and there have been many churches here since Saxon times. Perhaps it’s something to do with the footings, but the churches all seem to have collapsed, and the tower is all that remains of a church built in the late 15th century. Whilst the tower has survived for over 500 years, five churches have been built and rebuilt in this time due to the unstable earth, and the last one was demolished in 1977. At this time the tower was also declared unsafe and was closed to the public.

Although there are now limited times when you can access the tower, it is still worth visiting. The doorway is rather splendid and has canopied recesses on either side containing sculpted figures of two Bishops. And nearby there is a fascinating map showing the huge extent of the burial sites here, as well as many boards listing the hundreds of people who were buried. What a fabulous piece of social history.

And after that - a stroll round the unique “floating” Wybunbury Moss is an ideal way to finish your visit. No - forget that last bit - the ideal way to finish your visit is to sample the ambience of one of the nearby village pubs.

Nice walk round the tower and surrounding area. The tower is next to two smashing pubs, The Red Lion and The Swan, both do fantastic food.

Linked to the chuch the tower is a watchtower primarily. Surrounded by woods and maintains by a trust. Volunteers work hard to raise money that's ploughed back to secure the towers future.
Wybunbury village lies within South Cheshire, the village falls 5 miles south of Crewe and 3.5 miles east of Nantwich. One of the main features of Wybunbury is the medieval Tower. The Tower dominates the village and its surrounding countryside. It is a Grade A listed building, 96 feet high dating from the 15th Century. The Tower stands on a small hill at the junction of Main Road and Bridge Street, in the centre of a Conservation Area. Wybunbury Church was built in 1893.
The Church was at some time dedicated to the Mercian Bishop of St. Chad who established his See at Lichfield in 669. Known as the ‘Hanging Steeple of Wybunbury’ because of its tendency to lean, the Tower has undergone two remarkable feats of engineering to straighten it. The Church was demolished in 1977.
A new Church for Wybunbury was soon built on a new site further down Main Road ‘St Chad’s Church’. The Tower remained intact on the churchyard grounds, in splendid isolation as a landmark for South Cheshire. The Tower now belongs to the people of Wybunbury, who formed a Trust to save it and its six bells in 1986

Get up the tower
янв. 2018 г.
Beautiful village, great walk around nature reserve. Two good pubs, food very nice and they are friendly at the red lion, very welcoming .The Swann inn lovely in the summer as they have a very nice beer garden over looking the tower. Not as accommodating for dogs in side at weekend. Village shop which sells lovely cake. The tower I believe opens few times a year to public.Great views but not easy to climb up if you dislike small spaces and have dodgy legs.Worth the climb and not expensive to do so.They have a great wake in the summer, pie rolling down the bank and lots of other things going on.Has a real community feel to the day.
