Great place to visit in the winter! Great entry points to fantastic, deep snow filled plateaus. Great conditions. Enjoy off reading or snowmobiling in the mountains!

Fish Lake, a crystal clear mountain lake, right next to Pando!

One of the things on my girlfriend’s bucket list was seeing Pando, a grove of aspens outside of Richfield, Utah, in Fish Lake National Forest, that is the largest organism on the planet. We also wanted to do some kayaking on our trip to Utah to see Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks, and of the many lakes in the area (Otter Creek Reservoir, Piute Reservoir, and Panguitch Lake), the pictures on Google of Fish Lake looked the best for kayaking. Pando is literally right next to the lake, so we were able to do both in the same day easily. The lake was cold and super clear. I’m not an angler, but it’s supposed to be a fantastic lake for fishing. We didn’t kayak around the whole lake, but I did not see any sort of sandy beach anywhere…but that didn’t stop me and the pooch from taking a (quick) dip into Fish Lake’s frigid, crystalline water from a rocky shore. Things got a bit breezy when we were there on an August afternoon, which made for some strenuous paddling. The marina has a great boat launch and a little bait shop. Parking was ample everywhere around the lake, but there are really only highway pullouts for visiting Pando. Most of Pando is surrounded by fencing, apparently in order to protect it from deer who like to eat the young saplings. Fish Lake is pretty isolated, and is at a fairly high elevation (around 9,000 feet if I remember correctly), so plan accordingly. Glad we took the drive up from Panguitch for the day.

Great open spaces

We drove all over central and eastern Utah for 10 days and there are many National Forests. We saw a lot of this one near Ritchfield. Great place to hike and be in the wild! I did see a black bear down by the river driving on the freeway. That was very exciting and unexpected.

Great place to stay while fishing at Fish Lake. The drive is a bit long 40 miles or so. Get up early and hit the road to Fish Lake, one of the most beautiful places you will ever experience.

Caught and cooked over 50 perch at Fish Lake. Also hiked around Big Rock Candy Mountain. Beautiful area, plenty to see.

Pando, so interesting!

We stayed in Richfield, UT which is about an hour away from Pando, the largest living single organism on the planet. Certainly worth the visit to see it, especially in the fall when the aspen leaves are so colorful. Also, so few people. My husband photographed all day in this area which is next to Fish Lake. Highway 25 goes right through Pando. There are restrooms at Fish Lake which make the visit an easier one! We brought our lunch and had a wonderful time hiking and enjoying Pando! If you're in the area, don't miss it.
