Excellent trail for a quick no thrills 3-mile long hike with small 1500ft elevation gain. Good for families.

Excellent well-marked trail, in very good condition, close to central Santa Fe. Good parking at St John's college (upper parking 6 spots only). 3.2mi up (took the steep section) and 3.6mi down (took the easy section). Started at 7:30am on Sunday, very few people on trail until the turnaround at the top, and possibly 20people on descent, all very friendly. Good well-marked trail, no mud, no snow, feeling the elevation (9000) at the top, would recommend to anyone looking for good hike. Took 3hr10min, arrived from sea-level previous evening, kept a steady pace (easy going, but no stopping until the top). Great views of Santa Fe. My dog really enjoyed the hike, there is lots of shade and never above tree-line. Looking forward to my next visit.

We really enjoyed our hike at Atalaya Mountain. It was by far our favorite hike near Santa Fe. Highly recommend. Make sure to bring water and sunscreen.

Parking can be impossible here, but if you get a spot, you're in for a treat. The trail is very pretty, but it can also be steep, so you will work to get the big views up high but it's worth it. This makes a great hike, or an excellent mountain bike workout but only if you can go at a very off-peak time.

The views at the top are totally worth the work to get there! It is a rather steep trail up (we did take the steep route up to save some distance and easy route down). The trail splits about a quarter of the way up and you can pick your route and both routes eventually reconnect. The views from the top are incredible, viewing down to Santa Fe and 360 degree mountain views. Definitely a great way to burn off some of the amazing food of Santa Fe!

This is a wonderful old trail that has been around for a long time, and can be used as an excellent day hike up Atalaya Mountain. There are spectacular views of the city. Many thanks to St. John's College for making this trail easily accessible to those in need of a place to park. Be sure to bring water, a hat, a sweater, and maybe a light rain jacket or poncho.

There's a continual upswing on this trail, but well worth the effort. It begins at a couple of locations near St. John's College in a upscale residential neighborhood. The largest parking area would be at the college, itself. There are a few spots up the street between .6 and a mile away, but not worth the effort to try to secure one there. So I'm going to assume you will park at St. John's and begin there. You can't miss the trailhead marker which will provide a posted map of the entire mountain trail network you will be trekking into. So no heavy packs because you will gain about 1600' when you get to the crest. Either fork is OK at the beginning. And either will get you back to your vehicle should you not choose to make an extended loop. The 170 is a tad shorter in length, but I started on the 174 labeled as the Atalaya Trail. The initial walk from the parking is through scrub, sand, and gravel with little elevation gain. The 170 will will pass the Dorothy Stewart Trailhead network and lead you into the 170 to Atalaya across the roadway by the private residences. The 174 sweeps over to the residential road and then brings you up a stair climb where you turn south to begin a gentle climb. Take care on the 174 because it is used by mountain bikers also. Eventually both trails bring you to a marker for a junction of a steeper or easier route. If you want to try both trails, I recommend you go up the easier route to your right and come down the steeper. But I chose the easier trail both ways. Note that they will both wind up at the same viewing area, but the route to the right is a little longer. And the views on the ascent are better on the easier route. I don't know the one way distance. It depends where you begin and what forks you take. But I would think the one beginning at the college lot would be around 6 miles round trip. If your time for each mile on this trek is 15 to 20 minutes, then you'll be able to do this as a quick morning jaunt. But I think for most that timing would be too aggressive, so budget more time and include some relaxation periods to take in the wide panoramic views both at the top and along the journey after you gain about 800'. When you reach the top plateau you'll note the trail continues. Don't be surprised that other trekkers, especially the younger ones you notice booking on past you, aren't going back the same way. Some will try to bag Picacho Peak. Some others will wind down toward the Dorothy Stewart network. They will also arrive back at wherever they parked. It will just take them longer. In summer be on the lookout for PM thunderstorms. Bring appropriate gear and remember the gravel on the trails will be extra slick. Enjoy.

Be careful about parking in restricted areas. I saw a car with a boot in the St. John's parking lot.
We hiked this trail on March 11, 2020. There were a few areas at the start of the trial that were muddy. We were able to walk around most of the snow and ice that is patchy about 3/4 of the way up the trail. There were only about 5 large area of ice in only very limited areas of the trail that we had to walk on. We managed the ice well with hiking boots.
We walked a total of 7.4 miles including the walk from street parking, taking the easy way down (longer than the steep route), and walking around at the top to take photos.
We hiked slowly, took 30 minutes for lunch, and stopped for lots of photos so the round trip took us 4.5 hours.

A great workout and enjoyable hike, even with some parts of trail snow packed. Enjoyed the incredible views and watching the excited looks of multiple dogs taking their humans up the trail.

We'll be there in late March. Is the trail hikeable then? Snow? Too cold?

If you are an average "hardy Brit", I wouldn't anticipate that you would encounter much difficulty on the trail. Obviously you want to have some good Footwear that would be up to the occasional mud/snow you're likely to encounter. You would have the type of outerwear that you would use just getting around Santa Fe during the day plus a little more. Since weather varies a fair amount even from one part of the day to the next you would pick a good day and if things get crappy turn around. When the sun is out, which is usually the case, it can be kind of warm in the middle of the day which is nice.

Is it worth hiking for maybe just a mile out and a mile back? Anything nice to see?

The Atalaya Trail is a lovely trail. The elevation in the first 3/4-1 mile is not very steep, so it will be a nice walk, and yes, it is worthwhile to walk for a mile or so and back. Take water and wear sun protection. Enjoy!

can you hike in winter without special gear?
what is the weather like in December?
Michael W
Портленд, Орегон172 публикации
Not a good idea as you are heading up to 9200 feet, so there can be a 15-20 degree drop in temperature from your start point. Prime causes of death for hikers in the area are hypothermia (Winter) and dehydration (any time)..

How long is the hike and is it strenuous?
VN F
Санта-Фе, Нью-Мексико342 публикации
The responses of others were interesting to read. I wouldn't call this hike strenuous and I am hardly athletic. I've hiked Atalaya several times past the age of fifty and it is one of my favorites. Some of it is steep. One stretch of maybe 30 feet required a bit of hands-and-feet crawling, mostly because it was rocky, but the rest is good trails or open woods. It's not scary. The tough part is the altitude; just a few hundred feet can make a noticeable difference in your oxygen intake here (and this is an elevation of about 2000 feet from the foot to the top), probably much worse for people not used to high altitude activity.

Are trail maps available at the trailhead? Reviews state trails are not well marked. Any tips / help is appeciated. Thanks

I don't think you'll need a map. The trail is not wonderfully marked but you can see the city from almost anywhere. I've never had any trouble getting off the trails at Atalaya. (If you hike farther up in the mountains, you should be extra careful, though.)

How is the weather in this area in the summer?

Typically 70s as you are at 7000 feet but can get a bit warmer. Great Summer climate and Santa Fe is a beautiful town. This trail offers fabulous views. Bring water and drink it. Dehydration kills.

Is it possible to get to this trailhead without a car? We are thinking about going to Santa Fe using the train from Albuquerque. Is that possible?

The trail starts by the parking lot of the St. John's college, you should ask and see if there is public transportation that goes there.
