Although I'd visited Yosemite N.P. four times previously, this was my first time in the Hetch Hetchy area. My research of the NPS website and other sources told me this hike was a must-do, and when I came face-to-face with the falls, right away I understood why. I do love a good waterfall, and this one rates high on the list! In terms of difficulty, I'd place the hike between easy and moderate- just keep in mind that you will get wet on the footbridge, particularly if you go in mid-May, like I did. I find that to be the best time to visit Yosemite in general, with all the waterfalls at full power in the midst of the Sierra snowpack meltoff.

You can see Wapama falls even from main Hetch Hetchy parking. But it is worth to take about 2.8 miles hike to waterfall ( round trip less than 6 miles). You'll enjoy excited views at Hetch Hetchy reservoir and surrounded mountains. Hike is easy and can be completed even by small kids. We were there on Sunday and there was not many people . So you'll enjoy unique waterfall view without big crowd.

The trail to Wapama Falls is a 5.5 mi/8.8 km up-and-back hike that takes you from O’Shaughnessy Dam to Wapama Falls, the largest of two waterfalls located on the northern wall of the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park. The trail features an overall elevation gain of 200 ft/60 m and is rated by most publications as moderate. However, I should NOTE that my wife and I are experienced hikers over 60 years of age and in decent (but not great) physical condition, and we found the trail to be strenuous.

NOTE that if you are trying to reach Hetch Hetchy from Yosemite Valley, you actually have to leave the park and re-enter through another entrance. Take Route 120 toward Groveland and exit through the Big Oak Flat entrance station. From there continue about 1 mi/1.6 km and then turn right (east) on Evergreen Road. Drive 7.5 mi/12.1 km on winding roads through forest and farms to the small village of Mather. Turn right on to Hetch Hetchy Road – Evergreen Road and continue another 7.5 mi/12.1 km, which will take you through the Yosemite/Hetch Hetchy entrance station and eventually to the parking area for Hetchy Hetchy Reservoir next to the dam. NOTE that the operating hours of the entrance station are limited, so be sure to check the operating hours on the Yosemite National Park website to avoid getting inadvertently locked in this section of the park.

As for parking, there are two lots, one just before the trailhead and one just after O’Shaughnessy Dam. The one after the dam has a shorter walk to the trailhead, but the one before the trailhead (which has roughly a quarter-mile hike to the trailhead) has restrooms. NOTE that these are the only restroom facilities along the trail.

Begin the hike by hiking across O’Shaughnessy Dam, which also serves as the trailhead. Pass through a tunnel on the far side of the dam. NOTE that the tunnel is dark and wet, so a small flashflight or headlamp might be helpful. Once you emerge from the tunnel, continue along the northwest side of the lake. The first part of the trail is flat and easy to traverse; however, before long the uphill climb begins and the trail will become quite rocky. In fact, there is a good deal of loose rock, so if your ankles roll easily or if you have sore joints, you might find trekking poles to be very helpful. NOTE that the trail is very exposed, so water, sunscreen and a hat are all essential. In addition to the rocky trail, you’ll find yourself stepping over and around many puddles and streams (especially is you visit during the Spring), so a good pair of water-resistant hiking shoes are highly recommended.

One of the high points of the hike is Tueeulala Falls, which is actually fairly easy to miss. Once you crest a hill and pass a directional sign you’ll find yourself walking along a section of granite, and soon you’ll come upon a small stream that you’ll eventually have to cross. Look up and to your left and see the source of that stream, Tueeulala Falls, as it cascades down the granite slope. If you visit during Spring you will also be treated to wildflowers all along the trail. From this area you will also get some excellent views of the lake. After Tueeulala Falls you will gain a little more elevation until about the point you can hear the roar of Wapama Falls. You’ll then go down a rocky hill (careful, the footing can be treacherous) and around a corner when suddenly you’re faced with the impressive Wapama Falls.

What a sight! It’s rare that you can get so close to a large waterfall and actually feel its power. There is a footbridge at the base of the waterfall; if you walk across, you will definitely get wet, and the water is very cold (but quite refreshing).

It took us about four hours (including a snack break) to complete the hike. When we got back to our car we were hot and exhausted. Was it worth it? Absolutely! We felt we accomplished something physically and made some great memories along the way.

Excellent trail from the dam. Although I didn't get to see the falls because A) it had dried up from what I was told; and B) some campers with their tents near the falls surprised me. Since I was alone, I wasn't about to go near the tents. STILL, the trail from the damn (go through the tunnel) is a long one and scenic. Most of it is easy to follow but over the boulders it got a bit lost. Look for footprints. Great views and the trail is not all wooded. I wold rank it easy with little climbing, but there is some. Wish I could've seen the falls, but in October, most are dry.

After escaping the hectic scene in Yosemite Valley, we drove the somewhat scary road to Hetch Hetchy Reservoir (which is one of San Francisco's water sources). Watch your speed on the drive -- the rangers don't have much to do so they keep a close eye on you. The view of the falls and lake surrounded by sheer rock cliffs is magnificent and it is not overrun with people.

Although the falls are dry at this time of year it was still a nice hike along the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. The tunnel leading to the other side was cool. Gets really dark towards the middle. Walk is easy to moderate. Mainly lots of rocks to avoid or climb on and around. We had a beautiful day and enjoyed a pit stop at the turning point for this fall. Sat in those big rocks with the water view & enjoyed the peacefulness of the area. It is still worth the visit to see the Damn & walk along to see the beautiful waters below. Great history on how the damn came up be as well.

Falls were beautiful, powerful, and relaxing. My wife and I could have stayed there all day to watch and listen. If you tired of the falls you could just turn your attention to the reservoir and its beauty.

16 people, ages 5-71, our family tackled the 5 mile round trip and finished in 3 hours. We only took a couple of breaks, and the kids practiced their rock climbing skills at a couple of opportune places. The best part was walking the bridge through the second falls. Though the trail continues on for miles, we called it a success and headed back.

You can see the falls from the dam We hiked most of the way to Wapama but the trail was impassable before reaching the falls. You hike across the dam and thru a tunnel and then around part of the lake.
