Great little art studio. Well worth the visit and walk. The surroundings community even encourages it youngest to take part in the arts.

The other reviewers have talked about the galleries and they are very good, but the highlight for us was 1) the lady who invited us to sit on her porch with her and told us about living as a lobsterman's wife on the island for 60 years, and 2) the Congregational Church! The church is very historic with an intricate wooden ceiling that resembles an overturned wooden lobster boat. There is a charmng organ and a display of sea glass, which was used for some of the windows. It was like stepping back in time and imagining lobstermen of yore and their families worshipping here. (we took the mailboat which made the experience seem even more local, Everyone is friendly and happy to answer questions about living on a island off the coast of Maine, from a teenager to a mail boat attendant to the elderly women mentioned above!)

We bought the family pass for the 7am Cranberry Cove ferry for $75. Getting up early saved us money and gave us the hiking trails entirely to ourselves!
The day started at Great Cranberry Isle where we felt a bit odd walking down the residential road toward the hiking trail, but that feeling soon wore off as we stepped into the trail. Smooth path, easy, flat hike to the boulder and pebble beach. The kids kept exploring while we sat down on a huge rock to watch a pair of osprey feed their chicks high in a pine across the cove. Bring your binoculars!
Back on the road, we followed it south about half a mile to a second trail with a similarly spectacular view.
We caught the 1:40pm ferry to Little Cranberry Isle and started at the Isleford Historical Museum. VERY well done exhibits on lobstering, history of the island and life presently for the 70 or so year round residents. A short walk to the art gallery proved worth the trek as the gallery was filled with three rooms of beautiful work by local artists. Very well done.
The 4:00 ferry back to Southwest harbor completed our journey.
Overall I would highly recommend this outing. Hardly a tourist in sight on the islands, we had both beaches entirely to ourselves for as far as we could see! If you are looking for many quaint shops or lots of restaurant choices, this is not the trip for you. BUT. If you are looking for a glimpse into how lobster fishing families live and a quiet retreat with awe inspiring scenery, this is the trip for you.

Nice meeting the artists involved. Daniel Fernald's work brilliant. Terrific variety and some fabulous talent. Every community needs a place like this!

This gallery gets wonderful natural light - not too bright but, lots of light. It helps bring out the best in all of the art work! Over the years, I've been a few times and it is always comfortable to browse, chat with whichever of the artists is working that day, and soak in the different artists' impressions of the area. The art work is reasonably priced for original, framed pieces (most under $1000, many under $250), and there is always something there that speaks to me.

The Islesford Artists (Gallery) is one of those rare places where you can feel the creative spirit of the artist; certainly an overwhelming presence of their colors reaching out to you. While a bit out of the way of the main street of galleries - certainly the vendors in BH and NE Harbor need no outreach - the Islesford community is one that has some of the finest expressions of realism and (realist) abstraction that I've seen in Maine. And yes, there is a bit of bias to my words - on repeated visits, I have purchased a number of painting by Holly Brooks and prints by Rosamond Lord and Matt Brown. And my wife has indulged as well. So that's for two of us.

Now the Islesford Artists is on Little Cranberry Island (off SW Harbor). So access is by boat and a bit of effort. But if you are looking for the spirit that fired the imagination of generations of Maine's artists, then this may be the place for you.
