Kevin House is part of the Funakoshi Family Village complex in Yamada, Iwate. It is somewhat difficult to find, especially as the main road to the complex was wiped out by the 2011 Tohoku tsunami, and the new temporary road is a bit convoluted. Kevin House consists of a series of twelve very homey individual cabins. Each has its own kitchen, TV, and air conditioning, and the cabins are located on a hill overlooking Yamada Bay. The one irony is that there are actually too many trees keeping one from an unobstructed view of the water- even if the same trees help maintain some quiet and privacy. Cabins have two bunk beds on the lower level, and a small upper level that can handle two futons. Additional guests can use more futons to sleep on the tatami mats. There is also a water slide and play area nearby that is open in the mid-summer. A few things to be aware of- first, prices are excellent, but you must pay in cash. If you are not Japanese, be aware that the nearest ATM that takes international cards is the Japan Post Bank one in Kamaishi. Second, the proprietors are incredibly friendly and accommodating, but only speak Japanese. Third, part of living in a small fishing city in Japan are the speakers with the daily announcements. This includes the morning music with statements of fishing conditions, and the evening playing of "Coming Home"- music from Dvorak's 9th Symphony.
