The huts have 2-4 bed spaces with good bedding and mosquito nets. Bathrooms with cold running water and flushing toilets attached. Downside is they have no locks, if your driving in yourself leave valuables in the car. This camp is a no frills, self catering camp. Don't except much help or service from the staff outside of game walks. The game viewableis fantastic, I've seen hippo, impala, baboons and elephants but have also talked to people who saw kudu, warthog and buffalo. We booked with Patricia before we went (+265995444359). We drove in ourselves in a small rental car but don't need a 4x4 to get there. The stay was MK10k each day and there is a MK7,500 permit per person per night to stay inside the park. All the game drives and park fees are payable on exit.

We stayed here for two nights in November 2018. The camp has an amazing view over the top of Lake Kazuni - we saw baboons walking over at the start of the day and then back at the end, impala and hippos, and had just missed the elephant. Once you do a walking tour (MK4950) which takes about 2.5 hrs there's not a huge amount more to do without a car but sit and watch the world go by. The huts are basic but have running water, flushing loos and beds with mosquito nets, but no locks on the doors so we took all of our valuables with us. As other reviews say, you need to bring your own food; there was a woman to make tea for breakfast and then lunch / dinner. Overall impression is that it's just a bit neglected and has been left to run down, and there's no attempt to bring more people in, but it's a unique experience if you want to have your own safari camp! Getting there and out & costs: We WhatsApped Patricia before we went to check they would have space (+265 (0) 99 5444359 - the review below has the wrong country code). To get there we took a shared car from Mzuzu to Rumphi (MK2000 each) and then paid the driver an extra MK7000 to drive the 30 mins to the camp. You don't need a 4x4 to get there. It's easy to find the park gate and the camp is about 7 minutes past on the left - it took us and our driver a while to find but the rangers on the gate will help. he stay was MK10k per day plus an MK7,500 park permit per person per night. To get out there are flat bed trucks leaving from about 6.30am to Rumphi / Mzuzu.

The main problem with our stay was that the staff that cooked for you stole a fair amount of food. They were quite abrupt as well. Obviously, we would have been happy to share but this needs to be asked/explained. Especially since you bring the amount of food you think you will use, then mysteriously run out of bread/eggs/rice. When challenged they denied it, rather than explain why they took it. We are also 95% sure they stole quite a lot of money from a hidden pocket in a bag which was in our locked hut. This was probably done when we were on a game walk as they knew exactly how long we would be gone for, and it's likely they had a spare key. Although we can't prove this that is the only time that bag wasn't with me, or locked in the car during our trip. The place itself is fantastic, overlooking a lake where a lot of animals come to drink, including herds of elephants who regularly walk across in front of the huts (in dry season). We had some come right into the camp. They are not forced do so, the park is quite large, approximately 900 square km, so it still feels very wild. The huts weren't that basic they had cold running water and attached bathrooms. Beds were clean but a bit dusty, they had mosquito nets, although these had holes. Mattress not great. No electricity, but for me this was a bonus. For 10000 a night I thought they were good value. In ours you could have fitted 3 people, one double bed and one single. Joseph was a wonderful guide for the walking safari. We didn't see many animals but he clearly loved his job and the animals and went out of his way after the walk to show us some elephant behind the camp. The ranger at the gate was also very friendly and helpful. Entrance is 7500 per person per day, 2500 extra for a car per day. If anyone at Vwaza wants to discuss the allegations above, please feel free to PM me, as I don't have contact details.

I stayed here in January for 1 night as we wanted to see some beautiful African animals in their natural habitat without fences to restrain their movements. We were in one of the huts which is beyond basic and could really do with a revamp. They beds were covered in debris, it was clear we were the first guests in a while. There is no running water and no electric so make sure to bring plenty of bottled water and a portable charger if you want to use your phone for pictures. There’s no food available but if you bring your own the lovely ladies will cook it. I’d recommend bringing some form of cleaning wipes for the toilet and sink if you have access to them. Mosquito nets are on the beds but be prepared to share your bed with some bugs and critters and come home with a few bites. Long sleeved tops and bottoms with socks over the top are essentials. Our door didn’t lock from the inside but the camp is guarded at night by a ranger and there was only one other guest -a lovely lady who was far more prepared for the experience than us. However we still felt uneasy without the door locked. It’s cheap to stay and there are some gorgeous views and plenty of animals to see so while the huts were something out of a nightmare I’d still recommend it for the overall experience! Especially if you are a seasoned traveler/backpacker which we weren’t. This place could be absolutely gorgeous if renovated and we heard that it was potentially being taken over by a German company who are hoping to improve it so maybe in the future the huts will be revamped. The staff are all brilliant and helpful.

Getting to Vwaza can be challenging but it is well worth it. We travelled from Nkhata Bay and took a bus from there to Mzuzu where we got cash at the ATM and bought food for our safari at the Shoprite (essential as otherwise you won't be eating...the staff at Vwaza will cook for you though). From there we got a second bus to Rhumpi and from there we waited quite a while for a transport to the gate of the reserve (all the Malawians were super helpful tho). The accommodation, while basic, is in the most incredible location. about 50-100 metres from the lake where you can see hippos, crocodiles, warthog and many many elephants. The experience of sitting on the veranda watching these animals was one we will not forget, it was phenomenal. And then sleeping to the sounds of elephants grazing from the trees right behind our lodge was thrilling. We went on a 3+ hour safari walk with our guide Joseph who is a park ranger which was also brilliant. He had deep knowledge of the animals and reserve itself. We immediately saw many impala, kudo, warthog and other buck. He also had extensive knowledge of the flora and was clearly very passionate about protecting both the wildlife and flora in the park. Joseph went the extra mile too because we did not get to see elephants close up on our walk and so when they came to drink in the lake after our safari was finished, Joseph came back to guide as extremely close to the elephants. He knew exactly where we could stand and how close we could get and he ensured we had a very special experience. Joseph helped as a further time the day after the safari. We were trying to get a transport from Vwaza back to Rhumi and were just waiting on the side of the road. Joseph, who was on his day off and on his way to the maize mill, saw us waiting and cycled off to arrange a transport for us. His help was invaluable.
