8-10/9/18 - We three middle aged British guys are on our way back to fly out to London from Lviv in a few days. We decided to break our journey from Kyiv in Zhytomyr and visit the Space Museum. We booked ahead to stay in Po-Domashemu for two nights (Saturday 8/9 & Sunday 10/9). We took a 50UAH taxi direct from the centre (where they were noisily celebrating the town's festival day) arrived quite late at 21:20 to find the owners (I presume) in reception where warmly greeted us. The man spoke a bit of English and commented that we were three men. No doubt he expected a mixed group. He explained the computer and/or internet was not working so our original room was occupied so they would give us one in the annex which was in the process of being kitted out. We booked ourselves in for a breakfast (50 each) for 09:00. After check-in we were taken in the rain a few steps to the semi-built annexe into a large room (8). This room had a double matrimonial bed room with sofa bed as third bed. There was a glass bedside table, but no bedside lamp, and a cupboard unit with surfaces for things as well as a wardrobe with hangers. Lots of hooks were available. A small hot air heating vent was used to dry out our shoes. The owner keenly showed us how to use the LED TV and Satellite Set Top Box. The bathroom was spacious and had a proper shower in the corner and plenty of fresh towels were available. We had bought some cheese, fish paste, sliced black bread and Ukrainian white wine earlier that evening so I asked if we could chill the wine in their kitchen freezer. I recovered it an hour later, we ate and drank in the room with borrowed plates and knives. Afterwards I asked if we could store the left over food in their fridge. We settled to our devices but the wifi was so weak and unreliable we gave up. The night's sleep was good and I made it first for breakfast at nine. We decided not usually have breakfast but at 50each it seemed like a good deal if we were to have it traditional Ukrainian style we imagined. I was presented with a tomato omelette and a plate of slices of familiar looking black bread. Then a plate of familiar looking cheeses arrived. I was shown a tub of fish paste and asked if I wanted it, yes, then three slices of white bread with the paste appeared. I ate the cheese and fish paste first. By then my friend arrived, being a veggie and hating tomatoes an omelette like mine was served so we ordered an omelette without tomatoes. I finally tucked into my omelette which turned out to have salami in it too. My friend's omelette arrived, sans tomatoes but with salami so he was not too impressed but diligently separated out the meat before eating. He recognised the bread, paste and cheeses and decided he could not eat any more of it after the previous evening's identical meal. To cap it all he does not drink coffee, the milk I had bought him was off, the vegetable juice I had also bought him was 91% tomato juice (picture promised otherwise)! not a good start to his day so off he went to his room. Our friend arrived and was happy with the remaining omelette and two coffees. Overall the 150 got us three coffees, three omelettes and three slices of bread (we have had whole lunches with a big beer each for twice that elsewhere). We were not impressed so next day (typing this at the breakfast dining table whilst a sales presentation is conducted in the comms room) had just our own leftover bread, cheese, juice and fresh milk! Maybe we will get a free coffee? Obviously there was a breakdown in communications! The dining room itself is biggish but crammed with round tables and posh cloth covered high backed chairs. It seems to be a mini conference centre, training, sales, party or a wedding reception venue with a dedicated room with rows of chairs and a projector screen. It has a 42inch LED TV high up on the all with an AV sound system. It was on for (our first) breakfast showing Euronews with no other language options than Ukrainian. There is also an even bigger fishtank under it and dining extends outside onto a covered terrace by a pond. There is lots of outdoor space in the nicely tended garden, with various room and corridor balconies overlooking it. On my wanderings it seems like some rooms look like matrimonial suites, with every room having a medium size LED TV with Satellite Set Top Box. They all seem to be decorated in a kitsch Ukrainian style with no fridges or kettles but pairs of drinking glasses on trays. Whilst using the wifi in various places it was patchy and evident that the router was misplaced. I asked the owner if he could sort it and he reset it remotely. This had little effect so he actually went to the top floor, into a utility/store room and dug out the wifi router buried beneath lots of stuff! Obviously he had not idea about signal radiation. The room walls were thick so I encouraged him to reposition the router nearer the door before resetting. I suggested he get longer leads and position outside and above the door on a ledge. He said he would in time. Needless to say the signal from this quite expensive triple ariel Link-Sys Router was much better and reliable since! The booking confusion was sorted in the morning after breakfast and we moved to two rooms in the main house which had far better wifi than the original room 8. Room 11 is a twin room with one double and one single bed (which is a bit lumpy). There are lots of sockets for devices, hooks for clothes and surfaces for things. Two chairs and table. The bathroom has an actual triangular bath to sit in (the moulded seat) to shower. The sink has two lights for shaving which is very useful, as is the high water pressure for jetting out razors. No TV terrestrial or satellite channels are in English, Euronews is silent. Room 17 was a single room with an armchair, plenty of surfaces and electrical points. There was also a balcony with a table and two chairs. The door has a mosquito net). The bathroom was similar to room no 11's. I have added images of the timetables of the trolleybuses and the bus routes into (and therefore out of) the centre. We were out in town till 21:30 and referred to those timetables to get the us back but the services seemed to have stopped early evening so we walked the 2 miles down dark paths and over a rickety metal footbridge past the war memorial on the main road. To our surprise both a 5a and 15a trolleybus passed us so the timetables were wrong! On arriving back at 22:20 the hotel garden gate was locked so a buzzer was buzzed and one of the staff came to open it and the main front door. There is also a telephone number written on the buzzer if no response. Extra Notes: No hot water late at night as it must have been used up. Local howling and/or barking dogs at night so keep effective uPVC double glazed windows closed or earplugs in! Loud Morning conversations outside at 06:45 Pics of room 8 & 11
